A stay in Herriard can have different focuses: the Church of St. Mary offers a cultural and historical point of interest. There are also sports facilities, trails through wildflower meadows, a historic garden remnant and the bluebell woodland garden at Brick Kiln Cottage. When choosing a holiday rental, it is worth first considering whether architectural history, outdoor activities or a place to eat will shape your stay.

Church and Garden History

The chancel and nave of the Church of St. Mary are largely intact, have an Early English character and date from the 13th century. A north aisle, a vestry, a west tower and a boiler house were added during the 1876 restoration. This makes it possible to view the building’s history through two distinct periods: the surviving 13th-century chancel and nave, and the parts added during the restoration. The church thus represents a building history in which preservation and later additions go hand in hand.

The remains of an octagonal wall, which once enclosed the kitchen garden, survive in Herriard Park. Its shape and former function give the wall remnant its own context: this is about the boundary of a kitchen garden, not the building phases of a church. Together with the Church of St. Mary, Herriard therefore offers two different cultural and historical points of interest.

Trails, Landscape and Sport

Mown paths run through wildflower meadows on Herriard Green. Brick Kiln Cottage is a two-acre bluebell woodland garden with a circular woodland path. The routes differ: on Herriard Green, they pass through meadows, while the garden’s woodland path runs around the edge. This offers two different landscape settings, without implying a connection between the paths. Path maintenance may change; check the current conditions when planning your visit.

Herriard Sports Club has two tennis courts available to book. Weekly cricket training sessions are regularly held on Herriard Green on Thursdays from 6 to 8 pm. These provide different scheduling options: the tennis courts can be booked, while cricket training follows a recurring weekly time slot. Check the Thursday session in advance if you plan to attend, as times may change. Herriard Green also has a play area with separate sections for younger and older children. If this is important to your visit, check the current facilities in advance, as they may change.

Farm Shop, Café and Refreshments

Street Croft Farm is a working farm with a farm shop and café. Operating arrangements may change, so check in advance whether the farm shop and café will be open to visitors. Brick Kiln Cottage serves homemade teas with cakes, sandwiches and biscuits; lemonade, coffee and tea are also available. If you are planning to visit the garden or have refreshments, check beforehand whether a visit is possible on your chosen date. The two places have different highlights: Street Croft Farm combines a working farm with a farm shop and café, while Brick Kiln Cottage combines a bluebell woodland garden with food and drink.
