Great Dixter House and Gardens is located in the village of Northiam. The village is also a designated Conservation Area in the Rother District, and is home to Brickwall Park and Garden at its southern end, memorial sites and a historic railway. Northiam therefore offers several different points of interest when choosing a place to stay: garden culture, architectural history and recurring events each offer a distinct focus.

Gardens, Village Character and History

Northiam is one of the Conservation Areas designated in the Rother District. Brickwall is a Grade II* listed park and garden at the southern end of the village. The distinction is useful for finding your bearings: the designation applies to Northiam as a village, while Brickwall refers to a specific park and garden. Together, they offer an overview of different aspects of the local heritage, though they do not share the same focus for a visit.

The Frewen Mausoleum is located at the Parish Church of St Mary in Northiam. Sydney Smirke built it in 1846 for Thomas Frewen Turner of Brickwall. The Northiam War Memorial commemorates those who died in the First and Second World Wars and has an unusual wooden structure. The mausoleum and memorial offer different perspectives on the village’s history: one is a precisely dated building associated with a named commissioner, while the other is a place of remembrance for the dead of two world wars. St Mary's Church is open for private prayer during daylight hours. As its opening arrangements may change, it is advisable to check before visiting.

Markets and Events Throughout the Year

The Northiam Bonfire Society holds three craft markets each year. One takes place in spring shortly before Mother’s Day, another as part of the Midsummer Festival, and the third is a Christmas market in early December. The dates are therefore spread across different parts of the year. The markets offer handmade goods from local bakers, makers and craftspeople from East Sussex and Kent. A kitchen sells tea, coffee, cake and bacon rolls, so visitors can have a bite to eat there. The refreshments available may vary from event to event.

The 2026 Northiam Midsummer Festival programme included craft stalls, music by Sarah G and The Other 3, local beers and ciders at the Highwayman's Bar, as well as Pimm's, a barbecue and tea. These details refer to the 2026 programme; future programmes may differ. The annual Bonfire Procession and Fireworks has a different focus: the event regularly attracts more than 3,000 people. The bonfire is lit at around 8:30 pm, followed by fireworks. Here too, programme details may vary. If you are considering Northiam for a specific event date, check the relevant dates and programme information.

Historic Railway and Practical Information

The Kent & East Sussex Railway runs historic train journeys between Tenterden and Bodiam via Northiam, through the Weald of Kent and Sussex. Free parking is available to visitors at Northiam station. Platform 2 is reached via a level crossing over the tracks, which closes five minutes before the scheduled train arrival. Plan your route to the platform accordingly. It is advisable to check the latest information before travelling for timetable and service details.

The Northiam Station Tea Room offers a small selection of snacks and drinks, but has limited opening hours. These may vary. Together with the railway, this adds a practical aspect to consider independently of the gardens and history. Northiam can therefore be assessed through a range of interests: the gardens and buildings offer cultural attractions, the annual markets and Bonfire bring event dates into the picture, and the historic railway provides a reason to travel in its own right. You can weigh up which of these themes matters most when choosing your accommodation and planning your visit.
