A park with a miniature steam railway, a pebble beach and a museum with a film gallery: Hove offers a range of ways to spend your stay. When choosing a holiday rental, you could first consider whether you want to focus on the park, the coast, culture or activities on the water. The places below show what Hove has to offer people with different interests, without setting out a fixed itinerary.

Parks, art and history

Hove Park covers almost 40 acres and is open at all times throughout the year. As the council may update access arrangements, check the latest information if you have specific plans. A miniature steam railway runs along the west side of Hove Park. “Fingermaze” is a huge imprint in the park’s landscape, designed by Chris Drury. The Goldstone is associated with a local historical tradition: it is said to have been used by Druids for worship. Hove Park also has orienteering courses. This brings together art, a historical tradition and exercise as different interests in the same park.

Toys and cinema history

The Hove Museum of Creativity brings together two different perspectives on cultural history. The interactive toy gallery is designed around the theme of a magician’s attic. The film gallery celebrates Hove’s role in the origins of cinema; its exhibits include working optical toys, magic lanterns and cameras. Visitors more interested in design and play will find a different focus here from the technical objects and cinema history. In this way, the museum combines an imaginatively designed toy theme with a specific celebration of film.

Coast and activities

If you are choosing between Hove and Brighton, both beaches are pebbly; however, Hove’s beach is quieter, wider in some places and less densely built up. Hove Lagoon Watersports offers lessons and equipment hire for windsurfing, wakeboarding, sailing, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. As the activities on offer may change, check in advance which ones will be available during your stay. The public art trail “The Hove Experience” is suitable for experienced cyclists, walkers and bus users. Check the latest route and transport information before making plans.

Sport and local drinks

The area’s sporting history also offers a local point of interest: Sussex Cricket Club is considered the oldest professional sports club in the world. The 1st Central County Ground is in the centre of Hove and less than a mile from Brighton railway station.

Madame Jennifer Distillery has been producing local spirits and liqueurs since 2018. Its range includes gin, vodka, limoncello and cold-brew coffee liqueur. On the “G&T in the Distillery” tour, guests can sample the full range. Check dates and booking terms before travelling. Unlike the museum’s cultural-history themes, the focus here is on local drinks production and tasting.
