Ardeonaig lies on the south shore of Loch Tay. If you are looking for a hotel in Ardeonaig, it is worth deciding first what you want to focus on. The single-track access road, the half-day paddling timeframe and the specific section of the Rob Roy Way offer different points of reference.

Getting to Ardeonaig

From Killin, you can reach Ardeonaig via an 8-mile single-track road along the south shore of Loch Tay. The narrow road between Killin and Kenmore is considered a scenic drive. As road conditions can change seasonally, check conditions before setting out.

Cill mo Chormaig and the church ruin

Cill mo Chormaig comprises the remains of Ardeonaig’s pre-Reformation church and the walled graveyard in which it stands. The only part still standing above ground is the 5 m-high north-east gable; the remaining walls survive as grass-covered foundation remains. As a pre-Reformation ecclesiastical building and graveyard, the monument is of national importance. It preserves evidence, and further evidence about early medieval culture, the history of ecclesiastical architecture and the development of the parish may come to light through research and excavation.

Paddling and sailing on Loch Tay

Ardeonaig is a quiet launch point in a bay on the south shore of Loch Tay and is suitable for a half-day paddle in either direction. The bay has a rocky launch, sheltered, clear water and beautiful views along Loch Tay in both directions. The half-day timeframe gives you a guide for planning your time. The stretch of water around Ardeonaig is considered scenic for more experienced paddlers and is usually quieter than the areas at either end of Loch Tay.

Sailing is available from the harbour near the Ardeonaig Hotel. On a sailing experience described in 2024 with Legend Sailing, participants received expert instruction on Loch Tay; the same harbour served as the departure and return point. If you are planning to sail, confirm current booking arrangements before your trip.

Walks, routes and shore fishing

Ardeonaig is a good base for walks along the south shore of Loch Tay. The Ardeonaig to Comrie Drove Road starts at Loch Tay near Ardeonaig. The Rob Roy Way descends to the Ardeonaig Hotel; the final 3-mile section then continues as a road walk to Ardtalnaig. The Drove Road starts at the loch; the Rob Roy Way leads to the hotel and then continues along the road.

The south shore around Ardeonaig offers accessible opportunities for shore fishing: the rocky bottom slopes down in steps, and feeding trout gather there. This gives you the option to choose different focuses for your stay, from walks along the shore and a named route to fishing from the bank.
