Keith brings together architectural history, traditional music and trails through woodlands, fields and rolling hills. Milton Tower and Old Keith Bridge represent different historical building styles; the annual Keith Festival adds a cultural dimension, while waymarked trails and a heritage railway offer other perspectives on the surrounding area. To help plan your visit, start by choosing a focus: are you most interested in historic buildings, a festival date, or walks and trips along a railway line?

Defended residence and bridge building

Milton Tower is considered Keith’s oldest building and is a nationally significant, reduced-scale and restored example of a defended residence built in the 15th century. The tower is also the surviving part of Miltoun Keith Castle. The castle was probably built in 1480 by George Ogilvie of Milton, though this attribution remains uncertain. Anyone interested in historic architecture will find both a specific building and an origin story that should be treated with caution.

Old Keith Bridge adds a different structure to this historical picture. The narrow, single-span humpback bridge dates from 1609 and 1822 and is considered Moray’s oldest surviving dated bridge. “Single-span” describes a structure with one span; “humpback bridge” refers to its arched, raised profile. Together with Milton Tower, it offers a comparison between a defended residence and bridge building, rather than reducing Keith’s history to just one type of structure.

Traditional music and whisky

The Keith Festival is an annual traditional music festival. Its programme includes ceilidhs, concerts, competitions and informal sessions. If you want to make music the focus of your visit, you can plan your travel dates around the specific event dates. Check these dates before booking your trip.

Keith is on the Speyside Malt Whisky Trail. Strathisla Distillery in Keith offers whisky tasting experiences. If you plan to include a tasting, check availability for your preferred dates in advance.

On foot and along the railway line

Keith’s waymarked trails pass through woodlands and fields as well as hills and valleys. One circular walk heads east from the square in Keith to the Falls of Tarnash and Dunnydruff Woods. The waymarked trails offer a broader range of landscapes, while the circular walk specifies a direction and two destinations. This can help you choose an outing that suits your interests.

The Keith & Dufftown Railway, also known as “The Whisky Line”, is an 11-mile heritage railway. Its route connects Dufftown with Keith Town via Drummuir. Deer, foxes, buzzards and herons can be spotted along the railway. Unlike the circular walk, the railway route passes several named places, while the walk is designed as a trip on foot. If you plan to take a train, check the operator’s timetable in advance.
