Grantown On Spey can be explored through two very different aspects: trails lead through the community-managed pine forests of Anagach to the River Spey, while local history and culture are connected to the town’s planned founding, historic buildings and cultural venues. When planning your stay, the type of activity you want is especially important: a short circular walk, a longer walking or cycling route, a guided outing or a visit focused on culture each offers a different experience.

Forests and trails around Grantown On Spey

Grantown On Spey’s community trails lead through the community-managed pine forests of Anagach to the River Spey. Anagach Woods are also particularly important for the rare and endangered capercaillie. Seasonal visitor restrictions may apply to the forest. Take this possibility into account when planning and check the conditions before your visit.

The Kylintra Meadow Path is a 1.2-kilometre circular route featuring a stream, a large pond, woodland and a former meadow. It starts at Woodlands Terrace, where a roadside lay-by offers parking. If road conditions change, check the access information locally again. The distance describes the circular route, not a specific walking time or level of difficulty.

Walks, cycling route and guided tours

The Dava Way is a 24-mile or 38-kilometre walking and off-road cycling route between Forres and Grantown-on-Spey. A section of the Speyside Way runs from Grantown to Nethy Bridge. This gives you a choice between a longer route with designated walking and cycling options and another section identified by its two endpoints.

Discover Grantown Walking Tours go from the town centre through Anagach Forest to the River Spey and back to the town centre. Those who would like to experience the route with a guide have a different option here from the routes described above. Check tour availability before your trip.

Near Grantown On Spey, Cairngorms Activities offers guided gorge walking through waterfalls, pools and rocky river channels. The focus here is not on a stated route length, but on a guided activity in a river setting. When planning, you can therefore distinguish between trails, a designated walking and cycling route, and a guided experience.

Local history, architecture and culture

Grantown On Spey was founded as a planned village in 1765. It was intended for small-scale linen production and as a centre for local fairs and markets. The Heritage Trail connects with the town’s history: it is marked by 21 plaques and includes important buildings in the town. Individual shops and displays may change. Grantown Museum is an experiential museum in the Scottish Highlands.

Inverallan Church also offers a specific insight into the town’s architectural and family history. The cruciform Gothic Revival church was built in 1884–1886. Caroline, the Dowager Countess of Seafield, had it built in memory of her husband and son, the 7th and 8th Earls of Seafield. Its architectural style, date and dedication come together here as a distinct historical subject.

Spey Bank Studio is housed in a renovated former branch of the Bank of Scotland. The studio includes an art gallery, flexible workshop spaces, an artist’s studio and a pottery. The cultural offering therefore ranges from historic buildings and a museum to art and craftwork.

Whisky and landscape

Cairn Distillery offers visitor experiences about the production and maturation of Scotch whisky, as well as tastings. Check tours in advance; age restrictions apply. The grounds also have an outdoor path from which visitors can experience the landscape of the Cairngorms National Park. Whisky and time outdoors offer two different starting points for planning here.
