School Wood and Milton Wood are two specific landmarks in Farr; nearby is the Tordarroch Ring Cairn, dating from the Early Bronze Age. There are also buildings from various periods, community facilities and the single-track road to Garbole, which follows the route of a historic drovers’ road.

Woodlands and landmarks in Farr

The woodlands in Farr include School Wood and Milton Wood, which are managed by Strathnairn Community Woodlands. Together, they cover more than 40 hectares. Their locations differ: School Wood is directly behind Farr Primary School, while Milton Wood is on the southern edge of the village. The area figure applies to both woodlands combined. This makes it possible to distinguish the two by both their shared management and their different locations.

Clava monuments and architectural history

The Tordarroch Ring Cairn, a burial and ritual monument of the Clava group dating from the Early Bronze Age, lies near Farr. The cairn is 20 metres in diameter and sits within a stone setting that is up to 1.3 metres high. The measurements describe two different features of the site: the cairn’s diameter and the maximum height of the stone setting. The Tordarroch Ring Cairn is of national importance as a rare and regionally distinctive Early Bronze Age monument.

Croftcroy Cairn lies behind Farr Post Office. It is heavily deteriorated and is a unique form of Clava ring cairn. Here, the comparison focuses on its condition and distinctive type description, while the Tordarroch Ring Cairn is also described in more detail by its measurements and stone setting.

The Tordarroch Bridge represents a different period: this Category B listed structure dates from the late 18th century and lies about 1 kilometre west of Farr. Together with the Early Bronze Age Tordarroch Ring Cairn, it illustrates a clear contrast in age between a prehistoric monument and a later structure.

The churches in the surrounding area can also be located by their distance from the B561. Dunlichity Church is about 1.25 miles from the B561; the Free Presbyterian Church is about 200 metres away. These figures distinguish between the two locations without specifying a walking time. Check local access conditions for each church before visiting.

Community and local facilities

Farr Community Hall is located in Farr alongside football and shinty pitches. In the past, the hall has hosted concerts by leading Scottish traditional musicians. So, in addition to its connection with the sports pitches, it also has a historical association with music.

Online booking is available for a room, the entire Farr Community Hall, the changing-room block and the football pitch. Construction work may affect availability. If you would like to book one of these facilities, check current availability in advance.

The road to Garbole

The single-track road from Farr to Garbole follows the route of a historic drovers’ road. Here, a modern road connection meets the route of an older track. As road conditions may change, it is advisable to check them before travelling.
