A cathedral with a long building history, a walking trail with 15 information panels and early evidence of golf give Dornoch distinct ways to explore. Other highlights include the listed Mercat Cross, railway history at the Historylinks Heritage Hub and a wildlife hide at Loch Fleet. These themes can be planned separately: the Historylinks Trail takes you through Dornoch’s history, while the 1-kilometre footpath from the Balblair Wood car park leads to the wildlife hide. If you’re looking for accommodation in Dornoch, it may help to first decide what you’d most like to focus on during your stay.
Cathedral and historic monuments
Dornoch Cathedral was built at Gilbert de Moravia’s own expense after he moved the See of Caithness to Dornoch. In 1570, it was set on fire during a clan feud between the Murrays of Dornoch and the Mackays of Strathnaver. In 1616, Sir Robert Gordon had parts of the cathedral restored. The two dates mark distinct turning points: the fire during the clan feud and the later partial restoration. The cathedral is also a Category A listed building.
In the centre of Dornoch stands the Mercat Cross, a monument dating from the Middle Ages or the early modern period. Visitors interested in historic places can distinguish between the cathedral’s precisely dated building history and a monument whose date is less specific.
History on foot and railway connections
The Historylinks Trail is a level circular walk through Dornoch’s history, with 15 information panels within the town. It starts at the Historylinks Museum. The panels spread the subject across the route, offering a different way to explore local history than visiting individual monuments.
The Historylinks Heritage Hub includes a reconstructed Highland Railway carriage and films about the Dornoch Light Railway. This adds a distinct railway perspective to the town’s buildings and historic monuments.
Golf history and the beach
Golf has its own historical thread in Dornoch. The earliest surviving written evidence of golf on Dornoch’s links dates from 1616; the Royal Dornoch Golf Club was founded in 1877. The dates answer different questions: 1616 marks an early written record of golf on Dornoch’s links, while 1877 dates the club’s founding. This means the history of golf cannot be reduced to the founding of the club.
Dornoch has a Blue Flag-awarded beach. This recognition can vary from one season to the next. Check the status for the relevant season before your trip if the award is important to your plans.
Wildlife watching at Loch Fleet
Loch Fleet National Nature Reserve lies between Dornoch and Golspie. A 1-kilometre footpath leads from the Balblair Wood car park to the wildlife hide. This is different from the Historylinks Trail: that is a level circular walk with 15 panels within the town, while the Loch Fleet footpath leads from a named car park to a specific viewing point.
