Dalchreichart lies in Glenmoriston on a side road north of the River Moriston and directly on the A887. The village has its own settlement history; the wider Glenmoriston area offers additional trails and activities. If you’re looking for a hotel, it helps to first consider whether you’re mainly interested in history or outdoor activities.

Tir nan Og and Dalchreichart’s history

Tir nan Og is a designated Scheduled Monument and a prehistoric ritual and burial cairn. The cairn is between 3,500 and 4,500 years old. It is considered a well-preserved example of a late prehistoric burial cairn of national importance. Its age and significance answer different questions: the dating places the monument in time, while the assessment of its condition and national importance describes its standing.

Dalchreichart itself is a post-medieval settlement dating from 1560 to 1900. Dalchreichart Township was a depopulated settlement with 18 buildings and five enclosures. The first edition of the six-inch Ordnance Survey map, published in 1874, shows 31 roofed buildings in the township, including a school. The dates and specific details about the buildings and school offer different insights into the village’s history.

Nearby Dalchreichart is the listed Torgoyle Bridge. Flood damage destroyed the earlier Telford bridge; Joseph Mitchell redesigned the present bridge in 1823. Its history traces the change from the earlier structure to the bridge standing today.

Trails and activities in Glenmoriston

The Glenmoriston Beastie Trail is a self-guided walking and driving tour through the wider Glenmoriston area. If you’d like to use the printed materials to plan your visit, check their availability. For an activity on the water, the River Moriston offers challenging white-water kayaking. Check conditions and organised events separately.

At the Dundreggan Rewilding Centre, trails range from fully wheelchair-accessible to steep and strenuous. This broad range makes it sensible to check the specific trail rather than assume the whole site has a single difficulty level. Conditions can change with the weather; check them before your visit.

The Dundreggan Rewilding Centre also offers workshops featuring activities such as woodworking, bushcraft, photography and foraging. Individual activities and dates may change. If you’re planning to attend a particular event, check in advance whether it’s taking place on your travel dates.

Walking and cycling opportunities

There are opportunities for walking and cycling in Glenmoriston and the Great Glen, including the Great Glen Way. The Loch Ness 360 is a walking route through Glenmoriston: it connects the north-eastern section of the Great Glen Way between Fort Augustus and Inverness with the South Loch Ness Trail. The routes therefore differ in how they are laid out; the Loch Ness 360 explicitly links several named route sections. Check conditions and access to regional routes before setting out.
