The Balmacara Estate has 17 miles of walking trails. There are also a variety of highlights: ancient woodlands and rare lichens, the history of Balmacara Square and the trails in Balmacara Woods. When planning, it is worth distinguishing easy walks among the trees from a full-day hike. This makes it easier to assess Balmacara based on the experiences you want to make time for.

Walking trails and special habitats

Coille Mhòr lies above Balmacara Square and is easily reached from there. The area is designated both a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Its oak woodlands and the internationally important rare lichens found there are the reasons for these designations. Coille Mhòr is also an example of Scotland’s diverse ancient woodlands.

Thirteen orchid species can be found at various locations across the Balmacara Estate. If you want to plan your trip around the flowering season, check the seasonal flowering period in advance. The orchids are not limited to a single spot on the estate.

Balmacara Square: agricultural history and art

Balmacara Square is the traditional centre of the Balmacara Estate. Its construction history spans the late 18th to the early 20th century: the original farm building developed from a simple stable, harness room and cart shed into an agricultural complex. This transformation makes it possible to trace the Square’s agricultural history through its actual buildings.

The Steadings Gallery at Balmacara Square showcases a wide range of art and craft by local and national artists throughout the year. Facilities include free parking, toilets and Wi-Fi. Check these facilities again before your arrival.

Balmacara Woods and walking destinations

Balmacara Woods has easy walking trails among a variety of trees. The Tree-Spotter Trail winds through the diverse woodland; the Skye View Trail leads to the site of a gun battery. Balmacara Woods also offers spectacular views of Loch Alsh, Kintail and the Isle of Skye. The trails and viewpoints mentioned offer different reasons to spend time in the woods.

For a longer day of walking, a full-day trail leads to the Iron Age fort of Sean-Chreag, overlooking Loch Achaidh na h-Inich. Another option is the Crofting and Coastline Walk from Duirinish: otters are often spotted along the coast on this walk. Wildlife sightings are variable, however; if you are hoping to see otters, plan for this as a possible rather than guaranteed encounter.

Factor rail and bus travel into your plans

The Kyle Line runs through the Balmacara Estate. A Scottish City Link bus route also runs along the A87 on the southern side of the estate. Check current timetables before travelling and planning your day around them. The trails and destinations also vary in the time they take: easy walks in Balmacara Woods contrast with the full-day trail to the fort. This distinction can help you spread outings across your stay rather than trying to fit every destination into one day.
