Altandhu combines views of Isle Ristol and Old Dornie Bay with a long history of settlement. The village is one of Coigach’s original crofting settlements. The wider region also offers different aspects to explore: geology, coastal paths and marine wildlife complement the local history. If you’re looking for a holiday rental in Altandhu, you can weigh up whether the character of the village or activities in Coigach should shape your stay.

Coastal Views and the Summer Isles

Altandhu offers views of Isle Ristol and Old Dornie Bay. Off the Coigach peninsula lies the group of the Summer Isles, comprising around 20 islands, rocks and skerries. Isle Ristol can be reached on foot at low tide and has a long white sandy beach. The tide is an important practical consideration: check the tides before setting out. This helps you distinguish the possibility of reaching the island from views of the coastal landscape.

There is also a pier near Altandhu that provides the main access to Tanera Mor, the largest of the Summer Isles. Summer Isles Sea Tours offers trips to the islands aboard the Isabella; check current dates before making plans. Kayak Summer Isles offers half-day and full-day adventures, as well as multi-day adventures with overnight camping. These options therefore cover different timeframes; check availability before making specific plans.

Crofting History and Archaeological Traces

The crofting settlement of Altandhu extends for around two kilometres, from Loch Camas an Fheidh in the southeast to beyond the public road to Achnahaird in the northwest. Its history reaches far back. The Altandhu hut circle is dated approximately to the period between 4000 BC and AD 560. It is a poorly preserved, circular stone structure on a gentle west-facing slope beside a single-track road. The dating spans a long period; it is not a single precise year.

On a terrace within the crofting settlement lies a group of building remains from a pre-crofting settlement. The field system includes two connected enclosures and another small, roughly circular enclosure. This one measures around 30 to 40 metres in diameter. The enclosures may once have been joined by a wall. The level of certainty differs: the diameter is approximate, while the former connection remains a possibility.

Altandhu’s school history also places it within the region: until the 1930s, Coigach had five schools, including one in Altandhu. Together with the settlement remains, this offers a glimpse of several historical layers, from settlement dating far back to institutions of everyday life at the time.

Geology, Coastal Paths and Marine Wildlife

Coigach is in the North West Highlands Geopark. The Coigach Geotrail offers a range of geology-focused excursions around the peninsula. Along the way, you can discover Britain’s oldest rocks, fossils of early life and traces of a massive asteroid impact. This geological perspective differs from Altandhu’s archaeological traces: it focuses on rocks and much earlier events in Earth’s history.

Walking options in Coigach include coastal paths from the large sandy beach at Achnahaird to the high cliffs at Reiff. The North West Highland Snorkel Trail offers several easily accessible coastal spots where you can explore diverse marine wildlife in clear Atlantic waters. Coigach and the Summer Isles also offer opportunities to observe wildlife in its natural habitat. The region therefore presents several different ways to experience it: coastal landscapes on foot, marine life while snorkelling and wildlife watching in the open air.

For another perspective on the area, a 2013 route description mentions a challenging climb behind Altandhu on the final section of a cycling circuit in northwest Scotland. This describes the route as it was at the time; it is not current information about trail conditions. When planning, you can distinguish the local history and views in Altandhu from the region’s coastal and geology activities, as well as from the different conditions for accessing the islands and taking organised trips.
