Right next to the village of Westmuir lies Westmuir Community Woodland. For travellers seeking nature, this is a clear point of interest; the history of Community Woodland Park adds another perspective, covering the site’s former use and its later community purpose. The Camelon–Ardoch–Strageath–Cargill Roman Road is also known as Westmuir. It is explicitly classified as possibly Roman.

Nature and conservation on the edge of the village

Westmuir Community Woodland comprises four different habitat types. Invertebrates, plants, fungi and common lizards are found there. Habitat types and groups of organisms answer different questions: the former describe the natural areas of the woodland, while the latter identify groups that occur there. Both perspectives are relevant to nature-minded travellers. The common lizard is a specific example, while plants, fungi and invertebrates broaden the focus beyond a single animal species.

In 2024, the woodland was designated an Angus Local Nature Conservation Site. In addition, the charity Scotland’s Finest Woods awarded the woodland the title “Best Small Community Woodland in Scotland”. These are two different forms of recognition: the designation identifies it as a local nature conservation site, while the title recognises it as a community woodland. Together, nature conservation and community involvement complement the ecological interest of its habitats and groups of organisms.

From gathering place to community woodland

Westmuir Community Woodland Park opened in 2007. When it was established, it was intended as a peaceful place for the village to spend time; at the same time, it was meant to protect and enhance the local nature. The site previously served a different purpose: it was used as a gathering place for cattle drovers before they moved on to markets. The reference to markets places this gathering point within the cattle-driving process: it came before the onward journey. The contrast is also one of function: formerly, the emphasis was on gathering before setting off for markets; the park was created as a peaceful place to spend time and to protect nature.

A road with a possible Roman classification

The Camelon–Ardoch–Strageath–Cargill Roman Road is classified as possibly Roman and is also known as Westmuir. The term “Roman Road” in its name does not remove this qualification: its Roman attribution remains a possibility. Unlike the park’s opening in 2007, which has a fixed date, the road’s historical origins have not been confirmed with certainty. For those interested in history, these offer two different points of interest: a dated event in the history of Community Woodland Park and a cautiously worded archaeological classification. The first tells you when the park opened; the second describes how certain the Roman attribution is.

A possible cultural event

A 2025 listing mentions a Creative Craft Club at Westmuir Hall. The meetings took place on Monday afternoons and began on Monday, 4 September 2023. If you would like to include the club in your travel plans, check in advance whether the meetings are still taking place.
