Milltimber combines a riverside landscape with traces of its railway and archaeological history. Two walking routes are particularly interesting for planning a trip, and their descriptions offer different points of reference: Walk 11 starts at Milltimber Station; the Milltimber Circular Walk passes through woodland and follows paths on both sides of the AWPR. There is also a riverside path along the River Dee with a level section. These features can help you choose the focus of your stay—perhaps riverside scenery, woodland paths or railway history.

By the River Dee: Riverside Path and Views

The riverside path follows the River Dee around a broad bend and includes a level section. The Milltimber Circular Walk offers views across the River Dee and upstream along the river. The route descriptions therefore highlight both the path along the riverbank and views of the river as specific landscape features.

The Belskavie Tower is also defined by its location: it stands on a granite outcrop. This is a distinct, clearly identified landscape feature in Milltimber. Along with the river bend and the views, it means the area can be explored not only through its history but also through notable landscape features.

Walks with Different Features

Walk 11 starts at Milltimber Station on the former Deeside Railway Line, the Deeside Way. The Milltimber Circular Walk, by contrast, is described in terms of its woodland, paths on both sides of the AWPR and views across the River Dee. If you want to choose a walk based on a named starting point, Walk 11 offers that reference; the Circular Walk is characterised by woodland paths and river views.

Conditions on the Milltimber Circular Walk may change. Take this into account when planning rather than assuming the route conditions described will remain unchanged. The level section of the riverside path is a separate, specific detail about the riverside route; on its own, it says nothing about the other paths.

Railway History and Archaeological Finds

Milltimber Station opened in 1854. The former station buildings have been removed, but remains of a railway station survive. Walk 11 starts at the station on the former Deeside Railway Line, the Deeside Way. Railway history is therefore reflected both in the station’s opening and as the named starting point of a walk.

Archaeological finds also give Milltimber a historical connection. During the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route project, archaeologists discovered 90 bread ovens at Milltimber. Stone tools dating to around 14,000 years ago were also found as part of the same project. The approximate age refers to the tools; the figure of 90 refers to the bread ovens. This clearly distinguishes the archaeological details from the dated railway-station history.

For those interested in history, two different topics come together here: the former station and the finds from the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route project. If you are more interested in the landscape, you can instead explore specific features along the River Dee, at the Belskavie Tower granite outcrop and on the Circular Walk. These points of interest give you a factual basis for deciding what makes Milltimber interesting for your stay.

Getting There and Planning

Bus route 19 stops near the traffic-light junction of North Deeside Road and Beaconhill Road. Check the current timetable before travelling, as bus services may change. The stop location is a specific point of reference for getting there; it does not describe the starting point of Walk 11 or the route of the other walks.

If you are considering Milltimber as a place to stay, you can make your choice based on what you would like to explore locally: riverside walks, woodland, views, or the history of the station and the archaeological finds.
