Longside brings together historic churches, remembrance at the airfield and activities with different planning requirements. The focus is on the village’s building history, the memory of RAF Peterhead, and seasonal archery and golf.
Churches, Manse and Churchyard
Dun A Cluach, the former manse of Longside, dates from 1825. It is the oldest surviving manse in the village; its exterior and floor plan remain largely unchanged. Together with the parish church and the remains of the old church, it forms a historic group of buildings. A floor plan describes the spatial layout of a building; Dun A Cluach’s has also remained largely unchanged.
Longside Parish Church stands on elevated ground within the village and is visible from many directions. It has a rectangular silhouette, was designed by John Smith and built in 1835/36. Longside Old Parish Church is older: it was built between 1619 and 1620 and has been roofless since the 19th century. The different building dates take you from the old church, through Dun A Cluach, to the 19th-century parish church.
The churchyard of Longside Parish Church also has its own historical features: it contains well-preserved stones from the 18th century, as well as an obelisk erected in 1861 in memory of Jamie Fleeman.
St John's Church in Longside dates from 1853. It features an Early English Gothic style with distinctive details; the building is attributed to William Hay and is still used as a church. If you are planning a visit, check visitor access separately.
Airfield, Archery and Golf
A granite memorial stone at Longside Airfield commemorates the men and women who served at RAF Peterhead airfield from 1941 to 1945. The RAF Peterhead memorial is surrounded by a low, circular stone wall extending over 300 degrees. Buchan Aero Club uses part of the former runway at Longside.
Buchan Archers hold outdoor archery sessions at Longside Airfield from May to September. This period is important for your planning: check the seasonal arrangements again before your trip if you would like to include archery.
Longside Golf Club is an 18-hole course with a par of 66 and a length of 5,266 yards (4,815 m). The number of holes, par and the length given in yards and metres provide concrete details to help you consider golf as a separate focus for your trip.
A Landscape Feature Nearby
Near Longside lies Cairn Catto, a 48-metre-long, wedge-shaped long barrow in the open, rolling landscape of Buchan. Alongside village architecture and airfield history, the monument’s shape and its landscape setting offer different themes to explore.
