When planning a stay in Insch, you can focus on different things: local history at the Insch Connection Museum, the surviving remains at Dunnideer, or cycling and golf. Each offers a different starting point for planning. The museum has set seasonal opening days, the cycling route can be gauged by its distances, and Insch Golf Club is an 18-hole parkland course.

Local history at the Insch Connection Museum

The Insch Connection Museum presents the history of Insch and the surrounding district through photographs, artefacts and everyday stories. Images, objects and accounts offer different ways into local history and make the museum a specific point of interest for travellers interested in life in the area.

In 2026, the museum is open from 1 April to 28 October, on Wednesdays and Sundays from 2 to 4 pm; admission is free. As these opening hours are seasonal, check them again before your trip. The easiest step-free wheelchair access is from the station car park via the ramp to the platform and then through the waiting room. If this access is important for your plans, check the latest access information before your visit.

Remains at Dunnideer and the parish church

Dunnideer preserves the remains of a medieval tower, a vitrified rampart and an unfinished fortification. Dunnideer Castle was built largely using material from the vitrified fortification. This brings together three different structural traces and a specific connection to the castle’s building material: the site’s history can be explored through both surviving architectural forms and the use of building materials.

The monument “Insch Old Parish Church and associated memorials” includes the west gable of the parish church, the site of the demolished parts of the church and two medieval memorial stones. A bellcote dated 1613 stands at the apex of the west gable. Insch Old Parish Church was already in existence when it was transferred to Lindores Abbey. Together, these details offer a different historical perspective from Dunnideer’s fortification remains: here, the focus is on the gable, bellcote and memorial stones.

Cycling route with shorter sections

The Insch to Oyne Cycle Route is a 19-mile circular route. It can be divided into shorter sections: Insch–Picardy Stone is 6 miles, and Insch–Oyne is 4 miles. This lets you compare the distance of the full circular route with the two shorter rides and focus your plans on a specific section rather than the entire circuit. The difference in length between the two sections is 2 miles.

Golf in Insch

Insch Golf Club is an 18-hole parkland course. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer panoramic views across the Old Course and up to Dunnydeer. Members and visitors have separate changing rooms for men and women, with modern shower facilities. If these facilities are important for your visit, check in advance whether they are currently available.

For planning an overnight stay, the museum provides the clearest calendar reference: if you want to visit, arrange your 2026 travel dates around its opening days during the seasonal period and check the hours again before your trip. You can then shape your stay around your interests—with local history, a shorter or longer bike ride, or a round of golf. If you’re looking for hotels in Insch, start by deciding on your travel dates and the activities you’d like to do.
