If you are considering a stay in Heswall, you can explore nature, historic sites and golf as separate highlights. These include short walks through heathland, a named public path and historic landmarks with specific dates and features. If you are looking for a destination where you can explore the landscape, local history and golf separately, Heswall offers several such starting points.
Heathland Paths, Views and Protected Areas
Cleaver Heath is a heathland area with views across the Dee Estuary towards North Wales. Short paths run through the heathland and along the woodland edge in the nature reserve.
A public path in Heswall Dales runs between Oldfield Road and Bush Way. Horses may use this path only with special permission. As path conditions can change, check them before your visit.
Another feature is the designation of The Dungeon SSSI in Heswall, which is specifically for the area's geological value.
Memorials and Architectural History
The Heswall War Memorial commemorates 73 local servicemen and one local woman who died in the First World War. The red sandstone memorial stands in a walled garden, topped by a simple Celtic cross, and faces the River Dee. The First World War memorial dates from 1924, is Grade II listed and was later supplemented with Second World War additions.
St Peter's Church in Lower Heswall is a historic sandstone building. As far as is known, the present church was built in 1879 as the third church on this site. Its medieval tower served, in turn, all the churches that stood here.
The churchyard of St Peter's contains 24 war graves of service personnel who died in the United Kingdom: either from wounds for which they had been brought home, or as a result of enemy action in or over the United Kingdom. Oldfield Farmhouse adds to Heswall's architectural history as a Grade II listed farmhouse. Its datestone bears the inscription “RS/1604”, referring to Sir Rowland Stanley.
Golf and Cafés
If golf is part of your travel plans, Heswall Golf Club offers a specific option: visitors are invited to play its 18-hole championship course. Practice facilities include a full driving range, two 1,000 m² USGA-standard chipping and putting greens, and a practice bunker. Visitor arrangements and facilities may change, so check the current conditions in advance.
You can also plan a café break as a separate part of your stay: Heswall has a range of independent cafés. The selection may change.
