Halton can be explored through a wide range of themes: an excavated monastery site, a Norman castle ruin and a museum with an extensive archive offer historical and scientific highlights. Literary landmarks and open green spaces add to the picture. You can tailor your choices to whether you are more interested in history, hands-on science, landscapes or active pursuits.

Monastic history and sweeping views

Norton Priory Museum & Gardens is on the outskirts of Runcorn. Norton Priory is considered the most extensively excavated monastic site in Europe. The Georgian walled garden covers 2.5 acres and includes orchards, a rose walk and a herb garden. As the garden is open seasonally, it is best to take this into account when planning your visit.

Halton Castle is a ruined castle built around 1070 for Nigel, the first Norman Baron of Halton. From here, 360-degree views take in the Mersey, the Cheshire Plains and the surrounding area. The two sites offer different perspectives on the past: Norton Priory through its archaeological significance, and Halton Castle through its castle ruins and panoramic views. Access conditions at the castle can change; check them before your visit.

Science and literary connections

The Catalyst Science Discovery Centre is on Mersey Road in Widnes. Interactive exhibitions, science shows and hands-on workshops are part of its visitor offer. The accredited museum also houses an archive of more than 100,000 historical artefacts and records from the British chemical industry. Here, opportunities to get involved go hand in hand with an extensive collection relating to industrial history. Individual programmes may change.

Literature enthusiasts will also find a range of points of interest. The Lewis Carroll Centre features an exhibition about Lewis Carroll that is open year-round. Daresbury is also home to a stained-glass memorial window dedicated to Alice in Wonderland. All Saints Church Daresbury welcomes pilgrims and those interested in Lewis Carroll. The Brindley includes a 420-seat theatre, a 108-seat studio, a gallery and a terrace café. The venue’s configuration may change during refurbishment.

Green spaces and river views

Spike Island is an approximately 70-acre green space rich in wildlife and plant life. It has walking and cycling paths, as well as routes along the canal. Pickering’s Pasture offers a different scale: the local nature reserve covers six acres and consists of woodland and wildflower meadows. It offers views over the Upper Mersey Estuary. Runcorn Hill Park also has views of the estuary and a children’s playground.

Runcorn Town Park encompasses 157 hectares of woodland and grassland. Wigg Island, in turn, is an open landscape and a wooded habitat for wildlife and plants. Halton’s green spaces therefore take different forms: from a sprawling parkland to areas with canal-side paths and natural spaces featuring meadows, woodland and estuary views.

Trails and active pursuits

The Halton Miniature Railway runs along an almost one-mile route through part of the Town Park. The ride takes about ten minutes. Check operating days before travelling. For those looking to explore a longer route on foot, Beyond the Tracks is a 4.6-mile walking trail between Widnes station and Runcorn station. There is also a music trail through Halton: at 17 stops, QR-code stories share the region’s musical heritage. Its content may be updated.

Runcorn Ski Centre offers skiing and snowboarding lessons led by trained instructors; visitors can also ride down the slope on inflatable tyres. Lessons and tyre rides may change, so check availability in advance. Planet Ice in Widnes offers public skating, lessons and Widnes Wilds ice hockey games. Programmes and operator rules may also change. At Victoria Park in Widnes, the Butterfly House is a peaceful, butterfly-filled oasis. The attraction is seasonal; check the current opening period before visiting.
