Bolton offers visitors distinct areas of interest: an ancient Egyptian collection, industrial history, an aquarium and green walking routes. You can plan your trip around museums and historic sites, or focus on landscapes and outdoor activities. Specific options include a walk-through replica of a tomb chamber and woodland and riverside paths in the surrounding area.

Egyptology, aquarium and planning your visit

Bolton Museum and Art Gallery has a gallery dedicated to ancient Egypt. The museum’s ancient Egyptian collection comprises around 12,000 objects from more than 65 sites in Egypt. This brings together an extensive collection and a gallery with its own interactive focus: Bolton's Egypt explores the town’s important connections with the world of pharaohs and pyramids, and is designed to be family-friendly. Bolton Museum also has a full-size replica of the tomb chamber of Thutmose III, which visitors can walk through. Check before your trip to see whether the replica is currently on display.

Bolton Aquarium is the only public aquarium in Greater Manchester and offers a different focus from the museum collection. It is approximately 0.4 miles from Bolton Interchange, around a 10-minute walk. Both figures refer to this route and are approximate. The Octagon also offers useful information for visitors: members of the public can enter the building free of charge. Free entry applies to the building; check the current opening arrangements before your visit.

Historic sites and industrial history

Smithills Hall stands on the edge of the West Pennine Moors. William Radcliffe acquired the estate from the Hulton family in 1335. Hall i' th' Wood Museum offers a different historical focus: it is a timber-framed hall originally built in the 16th century. Samuel Crompton lived there with his parents as a young man and invented his Spinning Mule there in 1779. The museum is closed until further notice for essential maintenance work. Check before your trip to see whether it is still closed.

The two sites represent different historical points of interest: at Smithills Hall, it is the documented acquisition of the estate; at Hall i' th' Wood, it is the link between timber-framed architecture and Crompton’s invention. Bolton Steam Museum adds another perspective on industrial history with Europe’s largest collection of working mill engines. While Hall i' th' Wood is associated with a specific invention, the Steam Museum focuses on a collection of machines.

Parks, walking routes and event dates

Queen's Park achieved Green Flag status, as the Council announced on 14 July 2026. The Council announced on 14 July 2026 that the historic fountain in Queen's Park had been fully restored and was fully operational again. Near Bolton, Moses Gate Country Park has woodland and riverside paths, nature trails, and horse-riding and cycling routes. As well as museums, these paths and green spaces offer a distinct focus for planning your trip.

The Bolton Food and Drink Festival takes place every year over a bank holiday weekend. The programme includes craft stalls, live music, family activities and cooking demonstrations. If the festival is relevant to your trip, check the exact event dates in advance. This lets you plan around a recurring event without assuming a specific date.
