For a stay in Cockermouth, the castle, Wordsworth House and walking routes offer different highlights: medieval architecture, William Wordsworth’s childhood, and walks through the town and North Lakes countryside. Cockermouth also serves as a gateway to the Western Lakes and the Solway Coast. When planning, you can weigh up local history, walking routes and cultural events.

Castle and historic townscape

Cockermouth Castle preserves significant medieval fabric. It is a rare example of a medieval enclosure castle in Cumbria and developed from an earlier motte-and-bailey castle. Situated on the western edge of a ridge, it overlooks the confluence of the River Derwent and River Cocker, as well as the town of Cockermouth.

Cockermouth’s historic layout and well-preserved architecture led to it being designated one of Britain’s few “Gem Towns” in 1964. Castlegate House Gallery is on the ground floor of an 18th-century Georgian house in central Cockermouth; the building is Grade II* listed. Percy House Gallery is located in the town’s oldest townhouse.

The Cockermouth Town Trail offers guided and self-guided walks to 19 heritage sites. By prior arrangement, the Cockermouth & District Civic Trust can lead groups on a tour. The trail includes a viewpoint at Kirkbank: from there, you can see All Saints Church and the town below.

Wordsworth House and walks

Wordsworth House in Cockermouth is the birthplace and childhood home of the poet William Wordsworth. Guided tours present the house as it would have looked in the 1770s. The property includes a walled riverside garden with organically grown vegetables, fruit and herbs, as well as flowers in the style of the 18th century. The Wordsworth House countryside walk begins at the house and leads through the quiet countryside of the North Lakes.

Another way to explore the town on foot is the Green Circuit of Cockermouth. The route starts at the Tourist Information Office, follows the River Cocker, passes through Harris Park and along the Greenway to the Memorial Gardens, and ends on Main Street. It is considered an approximately one-hour walk that you can also do with children; it includes a quiz.

Harris Park offers views across Cockermouth and the Lake District. From the town centre, the park is accessible via the Cockermouth Greenway. The Green Circuit, by contrast, links several stops on a described circular route through the town and park—a useful distinction if you are planning a specific walk rather than a visit to the park alone.

Brewery, culture and events

Jennings Brewery is located at the foot of Cockermouth Castle. A guided tour ends with a tasting in the taproom. As tour arrangements can change, check them before your visit. Kirkgate Youth Theatre offers young people classes in acting and live theatre; class schedules can also change.

Local history is also explored through the monthly illustrated talks held by the Cockermouth Heritage Group at the Kirkgate Centre. Cockermouth Live! is a local music festival with paid headline events and free performances by local musicians at more than 20 venues around the town. More than 70 local acts perform each year on Saturday and Sunday; the annual programme details may change.

Daffodil Day takes place every year in March. Shopkeepers decorate their shop windows and frontages for the occasion. These two recurring events have different schedules: Cockermouth Live! runs over a weekend, while Daffodil Day is tied to March. If an event is a deciding factor for your trip, check the programme details for your travel dates.

Getting there and choosing a hotel

Buses run through Cockermouth from all directions; services can change. So check connections for your travel dates before setting off. If you are looking for a hotel in Cockermouth, you can plan your stay around what brings you here: local history and galleries, walks, or a specific cultural event each offer a different focus.
