Lowick reveals its local history from several distinct perspectives: dated church architecture, a war memorial, community history events and an information board about the distant past. Regular event dates and bus route 464 can also help with planning your trip. You can consider whether architectural history, remembrance or an exchange about local history should be the focus of your stay.

Church Architecture and Remembrance

The Church of St John has a nave and tower dating from 1794; a chancel was added in 1887. Inside is a Victorian hammer-beam roof. These details highlight different aspects of the building: the dates place its construction phases in context, while the roof is a feature of the interior architecture. The chancel is a distinct part of the church; its addition marks another dated phase of construction.

The Lowick War Memorial is a First World War memorial dating from 1920, made of polished grey granite and sandstone. Its inscriptions name those who died in both world wars. The date establishes when the memorial was created, while the inscriptions extend its commemorative focus to both wars. Here, a clearly dated origin and remembrance of those who died in two world wars stand side by side.

The board at nearby Hunting Hall Farm opens up a different period in time. It gives visitors a brief account of life more than 2,000 years ago. Unlike the dated parts of the church or the memorial, this sign points to a much more distant past. It provides a concise historical context, complementing the themes of architecture and remembrance with a different perspective on time.

Experience History Together

The Lowick Heritage Group promotes lifelong learning for residents and visitors through events, presentations and publications. Its presentations in the village hall are a recurring event, held on the second Monday of each month from September to April. If you plan to attend, check the schedule before your visit.

Down Memory Lane also takes place at Lowick Village Hall throughout the year, on the second Wednesday of each month from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. The event is open to anyone who would like to share memories of growing up in Lowick. Unlike a presentation, it focuses on sharing personal memories.

These time frames can help with planning: the presentations are limited to September through April, while Down Memory Lane takes place all year and has a set morning time. This lets you match your travel dates to a specific event rather than simply looking in general for cultural events.
