Bishop Auckland offers several distinct themes for a stay: Spanish art, mining history, listed buildings, and routes for walking and cycling. You can plan your trip around the theme that interests you most and consider the attractions and routes as separate elements.

Art, mining and the town’s history

The Spanish Gallery is the first gallery in the United Kingdom dedicated to the art and culture of the Spanish Golden Age. The Mining Art Gallery focuses on something different: it shows the resilience and courage of the people who lived and worked in the mines. A visit also offers insight into the art, culture and context of the mining industry, as well as its significance to the history of County Durham. The two offer distinct perspectives: the art of the Spanish Golden Age and the history of mining in the region.

The Heritage Tour of Bishop Auckland offers a chronological perspective on the town. It is a virtual tour that explores the town’s history and development from Roman times to the present day. This complements the thematic insights into art and mining with a chronological overview.

Buildings and traces of history

Bishop Auckland Town Hall is a historic building and is Grade II listed. The West Mural Tower at Auckland Castle is listed as a Grade I structure. These designations help to put the town’s built heritage in context without equating the two different buildings.

Escomb Saxon Church is located near Bishop Auckland. Built in the 7th century, it contains a Roman arch and Roman stonework. Its construction date and Roman features provide two specific points of reference for exploring the history of the church building.

The Bishops Shop presented a collection of artefacts and stories about amateur football; the shop temporarily occupied a prominent location in Bishop Auckland’s central Market Place. If a visit is important to your plans, check in advance whether it is currently accessible.

Walking and cycling routes

The two Bishop Auckland Trails differ in length and difficulty. The Bishop Auckland Trail – Short is 2¾ miles (4½ km) long, relatively easy, and takes about an hour. The Bishop Auckland Trail – Long is a moderate 4½-mile (7¼ km) walk through quiet countryside and woodland. You can choose between a shorter, relatively easy route and a longer walk of moderate difficulty.

For a longer cycling route, the 17-mile, moderate Bishop Auckland/Brandon Loop is an option; it runs mostly away from traffic. The Auckland Way Railway Path has a different profile: it is 4.3 miles long, follows a former railway line between Bishop Auckland and Spennymoor, and is used for walking and cycling. Details of distance, difficulty and use make it easier to compare routes and choose one that suits your preferred way of getting around.
