Butley brings together traces of a historic Augustinian priory and contemporary metalworking. The surviving structures tell of different periods of construction and use; Butley Mills Studios houses a working bronze foundry and forge. For overnight stays, camping is also available at Butley Village Hall for self-contained motorhomes and caravans.
Traces of the Former Priory
Butley Priory stands on the site of a former priory. The gatehouse and other parts of the priory survive within Abbey Farm. The Augustinian priory was founded in 1171. This date marks the historical starting point; the later dates for individual structures refer to different phases of the complex.
The former refectory of Butley Abbey is an early 13th-century building. Its walls were incorporated into 20th-century farm buildings. The remains of Butley Abbey Church date from around 1300; an arch leading to the south transept survives there. The refectory and the church can therefore be dated separately, rather than grouping them under a single construction date.
Details of the Gatehouse
On the north side of Butley Priory Gatehouse is a heraldic panel with 35 shields arranged in five rows. Butley Abbey and Priory Gate House, a former gatehouse of Butley Abbey, was converted for residential use around 1734. Together, these details illustrate two different aspects of the building’s history: a clearly defined architectural feature and a later change of use.
The dates refer to different parts and phases: 1171 marks the founding of the Augustinian priory, the early 13th century dates the refectory, around 1300 dates the church remains, and around 1734 marks the conversion of the former gatehouse. This sequence helps distinguish the priory remains chronologically.
Contemporary Metalworking
Butley Mills Studios is at the upper end of Butley Creek in rural Suffolk, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The studio houses a working bronze foundry and forge. It also offers visitors an informal, low-key cultural space.
Butley thus brings together two distinct cultural interests: the architectural history of the former priory and a place where metalworking takes place today. If you are interested in both historic architecture and contemporary craftsmanship when choosing a destination, Butley offers specific points of interest in each.
