Southend-On-Sea combines a distinctive coastline with historic buildings, art and leisure activities. Nine beaches stretch along a seven-mile coastline. Southend Pier is another striking coastal landmark. When planning your trip, it is worth deciding first whether you want to focus primarily on the coastline, a particular cultural theme or leisure activities.

Coast and Pier

Southend’s seven-mile coastline is part of the King Charles III England Coast Path. This adds a named walking route to the range of beaches: if you want to experience coastal landscapes on foot, you can take this into account when planning your trip. Southend Pier offers a different point of reference. At 1.33 miles long, it is the world’s longest pleasure pier. The walking route draws attention to the coastline, while the pier represents a single structure with a notable length. This makes it possible to take different interests in the coast and pier into account when choosing the focus of your trip.

Historic Buildings and Art

Southend Central Museum is housed in a Grade II listed building that reopened as a museum in 1981. Southchurch Hall offers a different historical focus: the medieval building is Grade I listed and has a moat. The two places provide different starting points for a cultural programme: at the museum, its reopening as a museum is part of the building’s history; at Southchurch Hall, the medieval classification and moat take centre stage. If you want to choose cultural attractions based on architecture and history, you can consider these features as separate themes.

The Beecroft Art Gallery offers another perspective through its permanent collection. It includes more than 2,000 works, ranging from 17th-century Dutch paintings to contemporary pieces. This range brings together a clearly dated historical reference and art from the present day. Exhibitions on fashion history are also held once a year. Alongside the collection’s broad time span, the gallery therefore offers a distinct exhibition focus that you can take into account when choosing cultural interests.

Planetarium and Leisure Activities

Southend Planetarium complements art and architectural history with talks on the exploration of the night sky. Its programme changes throughout the year. This makes it a different focus from an art collection or a historic building: changing talks rather than works from different eras or architectural history. For travellers who choose what to visit according to their interests, it is a distinct cultural option.

Adventure Island offers a different focus, too. The free-entry amusement park has more than 40 rides and attractions and hosts events throughout the year. This sets it apart from the coastal path, gallery, museum and planetarium. If rides and events are important to your stay, you can plan them as a separate leisure focus. Overall, there are several clearly distinct themes to choose from: the coast, historic buildings, art, the night sky or an amusement park.
