One specific detail of Langham’s architectural history is the south arcade of the Church of St Mary and St Andrew: it dates from the 14th century and is built in the Perpendicular style. The church is a Grade I listed building.

Architecture and local history

Langham Hall is a house built around 1820 in a restrained Greek Revival style and is a Grade II listed building. The Langham War Memorial is set into the curved flint wall at the corner of North Street and Holt Road. Historic walls made from beach pebbles are also a distinctive feature of Langham. The 14th-century arcade and the house built around 1820 therefore represent very different periods of architecture.

Langham Dome is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and one of the few surviving anti-aircraft firing domes in the United Kingdom. Its engaging displays and hands-on activities explore the wartime experience at RAF Langham. West of Langham, remains of the runway and airfield buildings survive beside the road to Cockthorpe. The dome and the airfield remains are different traces of RAF Langham’s history.

The Langham Street Fayre takes place every two years, is open to everyone and raises funds for Langham Church and the Village Hall. Individual dates may change; check the date if you plan your visit around it. At Langham Episcopi: St Andrew and St Mary, Matins is held on the second and fourth Sundays of each month, following the Book of Common Prayer. As service schedules can change, check the current timetable before planning a visit around a service.

Countryside and walks

Around 60% of Langham parish lies within the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Binham & Langham Landscape Character Area is often very open; woodland cover is below average, particularly on the valley floor. Public rights of way in this area generally follow the course of the river. The percentage describes the parish, while the openness and river course describe the Landscape Character Area.

One specific place for walking and running is Langham Village Recreation Ground, with its large open space. Access from the car park is step-free. If this access is important to your plans, check conditions before your visit.

Getting there and planning your visit

Bus route 45 between Holt and Wells-next-the-Sea stops in Langham. Check the timetable before travelling to find suitable departure times for your visit. Together with the Street Fayre’s biennial dates and the service schedule, these are useful details when planning the timing of your stay.

Langham offers both architectural and local history and countryside themes to help you choose the focus of your stay: the church, Langham Hall, the memorial and Langham Dome each have different historical associations; information about the Landscape Character Area and the Recreation Ground adds opportunities for walks.
