March combines local history with a location on the River Nene and the Fenland Waterway Nene-Ouse Navigation Link. In the town centre is the March & District Museum; nearby, church architecture, rail connections and nature in the Fens offer different starting points for planning a trip.

Local history and church architecture

The March & District Museum is in the town centre and presents local history through exhibitions, collections, audio stations and interactive features. Visitors who want to explore March’s past not only through exhibits but also through audio and hands-on experiences will find a range of ways to do so there.

St Wendreda’s Church has a hammerbeam roof dating from the early 16th century, with more than 100 angels. Unlike the museum, which presents local history through different kinds of exhibits, the church has a specific architectural focus: a precisely datable roof and its angel figures.

Waterways and rail travel

March is on the River Nene and forms part of the Fenland Waterway Nene-Ouse Navigation Link. Time-limited moorings are available in the town centre; their availability may change depending on local waterway conditions. This means that both the riverside location and a practical condition for visiting by boat are part of planning your trip. Check mooring availability for your visit in advance.

Direct train services from March station run to Ely, Peterborough, Ipswich and Stansted Airport; the connection to Cambridge is via Ely. Check the timetables before travelling to make sure your journey fits these connections.

Events and activities

The St George’s Fayre takes place annually in March town centre and is free to attend. Attractions, street food and live entertainment, as well as more than 100 stalls in the Market Place, Broad Street and West End Park, were announced for the 2026 edition. The programme may change from year to year.

West End Park has a skatepark. The March Christmas Market is scheduled for the first Sunday in December; if you are planning your trip around an event date, check the specific date in advance.

The Fens and wildlife watching

The Fens around March offer relatively flat terrain for walking and cycling. Ouse Washes Nature Reserve is the largest area of washland in the United Kingdom. There are riverside walks and winter birdwatching there, including ducks and whooper swans.

Birdwatching is therefore specifically a winter activity; for walking and cycling, the relatively flat terrain of the Fens is the main attraction. If you plan to visit Ouse Washes Nature Reserve, check its opening status before setting off.
