The Trave gives Klein Wesenberg a specific focus for a trip: canoe trips along a quiet stretch of river. The Neo-Gothic church, with its architectural history and protected stained-glass windows, adds a second local point of interest.
Canoeing on the Trave
Canoe trips are considered particularly suitable for beginners and groups on the quiet lower stretch of the Trave between Bad Oldesloe and LĂĽbeck. In Klein Wesenberg, there is a canoe launch and landing point by the river; from there, shorter trips are possible upstream or downstream. A longer route runs from Bad Oldesloe via Klein Wesenberg to Hamberge (Reecker BrĂĽcke): it is 18 kilometres long and takes about four hours.
The time estimate provides a specific basis for planning your trip. Since water conditions can vary, check local waterway information, conditions on the river and river-safety advice before paddling. This lets you keep both the approximate duration of the longer route and current conditions in mind.
Church and architectural history
The church in Klein Wesenberg was consecrated in 1885 as a Neo-Gothic building. Furnishings from the earlier church have been preserved; among the protected stained-glass windows is an altar window depicting the Resurrection. The year of construction and the furnishings retained from the earlier church connect today’s building with its history. The windows add their own distinctive note to the architecture.
More ideas for excursions in Stormarn
As a wider travel destination, Stormarn offers its own attractions for nature, cycling and culture. The “Rund um den Herrenteich” nature trail in Reinfeld is a four-kilometre circular route with 16 stops, directly on the edge of the “Oberer Herrenteich” nature reserve. Hahnheide is Stormarn’s largest nature reserve and offers extensive hiking opportunities. Brenner Moor is Schleswig-Holstein’s largest inland salt marsh; there is a section on a wooden boardwalk and a trail with ten observation points. The examples therefore differ in their specific form: a circular route with a defined length and stops, extensive hiking opportunities, or paths with observation points in the marsh.
Stormarn also offers different options for cycling trips. The regional offering includes more than 20 circular cycling routes, including two church routes as well as the Karpfen and Limestour routes. The BahnRadWege follow the routes of three former railway lines. One themed option is the “Postzugraub auf der Staatsbahntrasse” crime trail: along BahnRadWeg B, it combines a cycling trip with a puzzle-solving experience and a fictional historical investigation into a mail train robbery. Circular routes and a puzzle-solving experience linked to a story are therefore different options.
Stormarn’s cultural attractions also offer a range of experiences. Ahrensburg Castle was completed in 1585 and has served continuously as a museum since 1955. Jersbek Estate dates back to the 16th century and has been farmed ever since; its 18th-century Baroque garden is open to visitors. Reinbek Castle is built in the Dutch Renaissance style, was constructed from 1572 to 1576, has been extensively restored and serves as a cultural and community centre. The museum, historic garden and cultural centre thus offer different cultural points of interest in Stormarn.
