Hammoor is best explored through its landscapes and a specific cycling tour. Several forest and landscape areas of different sizes include the municipality alongside other communities; at the same time, the ADFC tour “Through Beimoor Forest” passes through Hammoor and Beimoor Forest before continuing to Ahrensburg and Delingsdorf. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between these two perspectives: the landscape areas showcase different ecological features, while the tour describes a sequence of places. A former raised bog, local building history and the broader travel destination of Stormarn complete the picture.

Forest Areas and Former Moorland

The 51-hectare landscape area of Nördlich Tiergarten includes Hammoor and Ahrensburg. Rehbrook is a 49-hectare forest area that extends across Hammoor, Lasbek and Tremsbüttel. At 159 hectares, Beimoor/Forsttiergarten is considerably larger; its area includes Hammoor, Ahrensburg, Großhansdorf and Todendorf. Their sizes clearly distinguish the three areas, each of which encompasses several places.

Hammoor’s landscape also includes a former raised bog with diverse secondary vegetation. It lies in a varied lowland area with grassland that is partly used extensively. Rehbrook is considered a near-natural forest on a historic woodland site. Its conservation vision includes a varied mosaic of forest communities shaped by the terrain and habitat for the great crested newt. The vision for Beimoor/Forsttiergarten includes relatively near-natural wet forests of various types. Nördlich Tiergarten is characterized mainly by acidic-soil forests and beech forests, as well as shallow excavated ponds; the ponds are fringed by wet forests and alder-ash forests.

Cycling Tour and Hiking Trail

The ADFC cycling tour “Through Beimoor Forest” runs from Bargteheide via Hammoor and Beimoor Forest to Ahrensburg and Delingsdorf. A hiking trail from Beimoor Forest to Gölmer Moor, by contrast, runs along the eastern side of Todendorf Moor. This is a drained raised bog in central Stormarn. The ADFC tour links several named places; the hiking trail can be identified by its endpoints and its location by Todendorf Moor. As local access to the trail may change, check the current conditions before setting out.

Building History and Regional Cuisine

A heritage register entry dated February 1, 2021, lists the building at Hauptstraße 17 as a “cottage with stable extension.” The Klassenzimmer restaurant and café combines modern cuisine with ingredients from Schleswig-Holstein. Menus and the provenance of ingredients may change, so check the latest information before visiting.

Stormarn as the Broader Setting

The broader travel destination of Stormarn provides a wider landscape and cultural context. Stormarn is in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region, between Hamburg and Lübeck, and has extensive forest and moorland landscapes. Regional offerings include more than 20 circular cycling tours and BahnRadWege routes along disused railway lines. Scale matters when planning: these regional options should be distinguished from the specifically named ADFC tour through Hammoor. One example of Stormarn’s cultural history is Ahrensburg Castle: it was completed in 1585 and has served continuously as a museum since 1955.
