The Hasenberg forest car park in Hamfelde is a starting point for hikes in Hahnheide. Historic routes and Hamfelder Park complement the natural setting with local history. Hamfelde thus offers forest landscapes, scenic views and historic traces as distinct highlights.

Hiking in Hahnheide

Hahnheide is Stormarn’s largest nature reserve. Its landscape is predominantly hilly and shaped by woodland, small valleys, streams and hollows. The Hasenberg forest car park in Hamfelde provides a starting point for hikes in the area. A family-friendly outing from the car park includes three short circular trails of around three to four kilometres. The route can be shortened at the Turmweg to reach the Langer Otto observation tower; from there, the view extends across the whole of Hahnheide. The circular trails and viewpoint offer different options: you can choose a short loop through the landscape or plan to follow the Turmweg to Langer Otto.

Historic Routes and Hamfelder Park

The nearby Hohenfelder Damm is a paved road dating from the 18th century and is a protected monument; the Sommerweg runs alongside it. The Sommerweg through Hahnheide is an unpaved section of a protected historic road dating from the 18th century. The paved causeway and unpaved path therefore show different historic forms of roads. Hamfelder Park also has its own history: after the mill ceased operating, the park was laid out as the garden of an estate. Albert Ballin bought the estate in 1906. The park’s history thus links its former use as a mill with its later use as an estate garden.

Waldeslust: Animals, Fish and a Cycling Break

The Waldeslust inn is on the edge of Hahnheide in Hamfelde and offers cyclists a terrace where they can stop for a break. Waldeslust has been in Hamfelde since 1873. A 24-hectare animal enclosure adjoins the inn, and the grounds include a children’s playground. The farm keeps Galloway cattle, Duroc pigs, moorschnucke sheep, ducks, chickens and geese in conditions appropriate to their needs. Waldeslust keeps trout and carp in its own spring-water and pond facilities. This means that, in addition to the nature reserve, animal husbandry and fish farming are also tangible local highlights. If you plan to visit Waldeslust, check the latest information on its offerings and facilities in advance.
