At Großensee, you can shape your visit around what you want to do by the water: swimming, taking a break on the shore or getting active are all options at the South Beach.
At the South Beach
You can swim in the lake; for relaxing, there is a large sunbathing lawn and a pier. A playground and a beach volleyball area offer further options. This makes it possible to combine different activities in the same beach area, so a visit need not be limited to swimming.
Großensee and the South Beach are in the Stormarn Switzerland. Wooded views along the shore shape the lake’s surroundings; the South Beach is also designated as a place to watch the sunset.
For food on site, there is a kiosk or a restaurant. Opening hours and services may vary by season. If you plan to have a meal there, check the seasonal opening hours in advance.
Staying overnight at Großensee
Campingplatz ABC is next to the swimming area at Großensee and offers overnight stays right by the lake in a tent, motorhome or glamping lodge. Options and availability may change, so check the latest information before booking.
Stormarn as a wider travel destination
Stormarn lies in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region between Hamburg and Lübeck and is well suited to day trips. Its extensive woodland and moorland landscapes define the wider region. This information provides an overview of Stormarn as a wider travel destination; the local offerings at Großensee are the separate focus here.
In Stormarn, Hahnheide is the largest nature reserve and offers extensive hiking opportunities. Brenner Moor is Schleswig-Holstein’s largest inland salt marsh. There is a section on a wooden boardwalk and a trail with ten observation points. The two natural attractions offer different experiences: extensive hikes in Hahnheide and opportunities to observe the moor.
Stormarn has more than 20 circular cycling routes, as well as BahnRadWege cycling routes along the tracks of three former railway lines. One specific route within the wider travel destination of Stormarn is the “Rund um den Herrenteich” nature trail in Reinfeld: it is four kilometres long, has 16 stops and runs right along the edge of the “Oberer Herrenteich” nature reserve. In Stormarn, the Trave in the north and the Bille in the south invite you to go paddling with family, friends or colleagues. This offers a different experience from swimming at Großensee: the focus here is on paddling on rivers, not spending time on a lakeshore.
The region also offers historical and cultural attractions. Ahrensburg Castle was completed in 1585 and has served continuously as a museum since 1955. The Baroque garden at Jersbek Manor, dating from the 18th century, is open to visitors; the estate dates from the 16th century and has been in operation ever since.
