Barsbüttel combines the almost urban character of its main town, linked to its proximity to Hamburg, with a long history and practical topics to consider when planning a stay. These include the swimming pool, several cycling routes and public events. If you are looking for more ideas, you can explore the wider Stormarn travel destination.

History and Character

People were living in the area at least 6,000 years ago; agriculture shaped life in Barsbüttel for centuries. Its historical roots therefore span from early human presence to a long-standing agricultural character. Alongside this is the almost urban character of the main town, connected with its proximity to Hamburg.

Swimming Pool and Local Activities

The Barsbüttel swimming pool has a 25-metre-long and 12.5-metre-wide pool with starting blocks, a one-metre diving board and a three-metre diving tower. There is also a shallow toddlers’ pool with a small slide. Check the swimming pool’s current operating status before your visit.

Barsbüttel and its surroundings offer several cycling routes. For specific planning, consult up-to-date route information, as availability and conditions may change. A local civic association offers public events in and around Barsbüttel, including cultural events, activities focused on local history, walking activities and information events. If you would like to plan your stay around a specific date, check event dates in advance.

Stormarn as a Separate Regional Destination

Stormarn lies between Hamburg and Lübeck and is well suited to day trips and short breaks. The wider travel destination has more than 20 circular cycling routes and BahnRadWege cycling paths along disused railway lines. These follow the routes of three former railway lines through Stormarn’s landscapes. The circular cycling routes include two church routes, as well as the Karpfen and Limestour routes.

Ahrensburg Palace was completed in 1585 and has served continuously as a museum since 1955. The Hahnheide offers a different perspective: it is Stormarn’s largest nature reserve and has extensive hiking opportunities. At Herrenteich in Reinfeld, there are two specific route options: the “Around Herrenteich” nature trail is a four-kilometre circular route with 16 stops, right on the edge of the “Oberer Herrenteich” nature reserve. Another 3.6-kilometre circular route goes around the lower Herrenteich. The circular route around the lower Herrenteich is 400 metres shorter than the nature trail.

Brenner Moor is Schleswig-Holstein’s largest inland salt marsh. It has a section along a wooden boardwalk and a trail with ten observation points. Culinary experiences are also part of the wider Stormarn travel destination: regional produce can be bought directly from the fields, and farm cafés serve local specialties.
