Stördorf lies in the Wilstermarsch and is shaped by the Stör, the Bekau and the mouth of the Wilster Au. A notable cultural landmark is the Honigfleth drainage windmill in the district of Honigfleth. Here, the landscape and a distinctive chapter of architectural history come together.

Waterways and Mill History

The waterways define the character of the area: the Stör runs alongside Stördorf, while the Bekau and Wilster Au form part of its boundaries. Together with the Wilstermarsch, they provide the landscape setting for a stay. Stördorf can thus be explored not only through a single building or place name, but also through its connections to the river and marshland.

Honigfleth Mill dates from 1850 and is a protected cultural monument. It is considered the last surviving wooden drainage windmill of its type in northern Germany. This makes it a striking example of regional mill culture. An information board explains the mill’s history and how it works. On certain occasions, its sails are set and turned; if you would like to see it in motion, check in advance when these occasions take place.

The Wider Steinburg Destination

The wider Steinburg destination also offers landscapes and geographical features of interest. The Wilstermarsch is one of Schleswig-Holstein’s oldest landscapes. It is home to Germany’s lowest point on land, at 3.54 metres below normal zero. The Steinburg district encompasses more than marshland: its varied landscape stretches from the Elbe to the Holstein Auenland.

The regional information offers different scales for cyclists. The Elbe Cycle Route is one of five long-distance cycle routes that pass through the Steinburg district. The Schloss Tour offers a more specific route: it is 15 kilometres long, rated easy and described as taking one hour. The cycle route passes Breitenburg Castle, after which it is named. The castle is considered a historic focal point of the Stör landscape and has shaped the region for centuries. Check route conditions before setting off.

Cultural attractions across the wider Steinburg destination are spread across several towns. In Glückstadt, the Detlefsen Museum provides a comprehensive picture of the town and the Holstein Elbe marshes, past and present. Glückstadt’s town church was built as the first Protestant church in the duchies of Holstein and Schleswig. The Palais für aktuelle Kunst, also in Glückstadt, presents contemporary art in a Renaissance setting.

In Itzehoe, the Kreismuseum Prinzeßhof focuses on the history and cultural history of the Steinburg district in the 19th and 20th centuries; it is housed in the town’s oldest secular building. The Wenzel Hablik Museum displays the artist’s estate, including paintings, drawings and designs for utopian space settlements, as well as furniture, textiles and collections of shell and metal figures. These museums take different approaches, ranging from regional history to an artist’s estate.

Seasonal events may also play a part in planning a trip to Steinburg. Wacken Open Air takes place annually at the festival site in Wacken and is one of the world’s largest heavy metal festivals. From mid-September to the end of October, the Steinburg Wild Weeks take place: chefs from the region prepare traditional and unusual dishes featuring hare, roe deer, wild boar or wild duck. For your travel year, check the festival dates and ticket information, as well as the specific dates and participating restaurants for the Wild Weeks.
