Horst-Herzhorn offers a variety of ways to spend your stay: cycling tours through marsh and moor, walks along the Rhin, seasonal stork watching and events. You can choose based on tour length, landscape and time of year. When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to decide first whether you would rather spend the day cycling, by the water or attending an event.
Cycling Tours with Different Highlights
The Sommertörn is an easy 24-kilometre circular cycling tour through Sommerland and the open marsh landscape. It starts at Horst station and returns to Horst. The 34-kilometre Kiebitztörn also starts at Horst station. It passes Horst Mill, runs through the Königsmoor nature conservation area and continues through the marsh landscape. The route returns to Horst via Altenmoor; there you’ll find a rose garden with historic rose varieties.
The Storchentörn also starts at Horst station and runs via Hohenfelde and Glindesmoor through meadows, fields and small villages. The route leads from the marsh to the Geest uplands as far as Hohenfelde, then passes through lower-lying marsh and moor areas. In spring, with a little luck, you can watch storks nesting at several nests along the route. Spring is the right time for this wildlife watching, though sightings are not guaranteed.
