Engelbrechtsche Wildnis can be explored through two very specific themes: the history of the diked area and vegetable growing around the Rhin. Recurring events and activities on the water round out the picture. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can plan your stay around whether you are more interested in local history, agriculture or an event date.

History, the Rhin and Vegetable Growing

The area was diked in 1615; the name “Wildnis” has remained as part of its landscape history. Johannes Joachim Engelbrecht bought Wildnis in 1860, and from 1861 the area was named Engelbrechtsche Wildnis. The Rhin is the village’s main waterway. Fertile marshland around the Rhin supports vegetable growing, so the landscape and agriculture are closely connected here.

Hauschildt’s vegetable farm grows around 32 hectares of open-field vegetables, in addition to production under glass and in a polytunnel. The figure refers to the open-field area and is approximate. According to family records, vegetable growing began in 1903. In this way, the farm’s documented history and its various growing methods sit side by side. If you would first like to learn about the farm digitally, you can take its virtual tour.

Events on the Rhin

The Wildnis Cup features running and canoeing events on and alongside the Rhin. Competitions include a relay race around the Rhin and a 500-metre canoe sprint in front of the Poppenhuus. There are also several competitions for small and large teams. One event for families and children includes games on a meadow. The events described offer different ways to take part in the theme: the running course, canoe sprint and meadow games are not the same activity.

Rhin in Flammen is also a recurring event. It features a lantern procession around the Rhin, accompanied by music and illuminated boats. The Wildnis Cup and Rhin in Flammen are recurring events; programmes and event details may change. If you are planning your trip around one of them, check the dates and schedule for that year’s event.

Poppenhuus and Activities on the Water

The Poppenhuus is a historic farmhouse. Its name refers to a doll that a former owner placed in the gable. The house also has a specific connection to the Wildnis Cup: the 500-metre canoe sprint takes place in front of the Poppenhuus. This makes it possible to distinguish the house’s historical significance from a specific part of the competition programme.

Fishing is possible along the Rhin; local permits and regulations may apply. You can canoe on the Rhin if you rent a canoe. Check locally whether rentals and access are available for your plans. The distinction is useful for planning: when fishing, you should follow the applicable local rules, while canoeing requires you to rent a canoe.

Steinburg in the Wider Region

In the wider Steinburg travel region, the district’s varied landscape stretches from the Elbe to the Holsteiner Auenland. Five long-distance cycle routes pass through the region, including the Elbe Cycle Route. These details place Engelbrechtsche Wildnis within the wider Steinburg landscape and provide a regional context for cyclists, without implying that a specific cycle route passes through the village.
