The Mürwik Water Tower brings together a specific technical history and a viewpoint: from its platform, you can see the city of Flensburg and the Flensburg Fjord. Together with Twedter Feld, paths along the beach and maritime buildings, it offers a diverse picture of the region. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing Mürwik’s nature and culture from other offerings in the Flensburg destination.

Water Tower, Naval History and Architecture

The Mürwik Water Tower was built in 1961–1962 to maintain water pressure and increase the network’s storage capacity. The structure therefore serves two supply-related purposes: maintaining pressure in the network and providing more storage space. At the same time, the viewing platform offers visitors a view of Flensburg and the fjord. Engineering history and viewpoint come together in this building.

Another maritime highlight is the Naval Academy in Flensburg’s Mürwik district. Since 1910, it has been the German Navy’s central training institution for naval officers. Its waterfront, which extends for more than 200 metres, and its approximately 60-metre-high tower define the panorama of the southern shore of the Flensburg Fjord. The former Commandant’s House is home to the Military History Collection, which presents German naval history from 1848 to the present day. Here, the training institution, its distinctive silhouette and a historical collection represent different aspects of naval history.

Christ Church in Mürwik also holds a historical detail: it houses a 16th-century crucifix that came from the late Gothic church in Wilster. The artwork’s origins thus point beyond Mürwik to another place in Schleswig-Holstein.

Twedter Feld and Paths Along the Beach

The Twedter Feld nature reserve is located in the Mürwik district. Its land use has two distinct aspects: in the north, the area includes a former Bundeswehr training ground, while the south consists of agricultural land. Designated paths can be used for walking, cycling, horse riding and jogging. The paths connect the nature reserve with several forms of active recreation, without implying that all the activities are the same.

The Ewoldtweg offers a different kind of connection: it runs along the beach and links Fahrensodde with Solitüde and Meierwik. This makes it possible to distinguish between two different landscape settings—designated paths in the nature reserve and a route that runs along the beach. Solitüde is also a beach destination elsewhere in the Flensburg destination; the Ewoldtweg connects it with the other places mentioned.

More Culture and Nature in Flensburg

Other places and routes in the Flensburg destination add to the range of themes. In Flensburg, Oluf-Samson-Gang connects Norderstraße with Schiffbrücke. Its picturesque half-timbered houses date from the 17th century. The Flensburg Maritime Museum presents the maritime history of the city and the region, shaped by both German and Danish influences, through exhibits and hands-on activities. Here, a historic lane and regional seafaring history appeal to two different cultural interests.

For cycling tours, RadRundUm Flensburg comprises three themed routes around Flensburg. The routes extend into the surrounding municipalities of Harrislee, Handewitt, Tastrup, Wees and Glücksburg. At notable points, themed stations provide information about nature, ecology, history and culture. The three themed routes go beyond Flensburg and extend into the surrounding municipalities of Harrislee, Handewitt, Tastrup, Wees and Glücksburg.

Solitüde is also a beach destination in Flensburg. On the east coast, the wide white sandy beach offers space for picnics, volleyball and kite flying, while also providing views of the Danish coast. At the harbour head in Flensburg, there is space for games, concerts, small markets and even an ice rink by the harbour and fjord. Individual events are seasonal. In the Flensburg destination, beach and harbour offerings complement Mürwik’s themes of the water tower and Twedter Feld.
