Schönwohld is a district of the municipality of Achterwehr, west of Kiel. Two features stand out when choosing a place to stay: the landscape around Hansdorfer See and the local school chronicle, which covers the period from 1882 to 1960. There is also a specifically described walking and cycling path, as well as a number of cultural heritage sites. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can therefore consider Schönwohld primarily in terms of its natural environment and local history.
Hansdorfer See and the floodplain landscape
Hansdorfer See lies east of district road 32 near Schönwohld. The assessment of the FFH conservation area describes it as shallow, heavily silted and eutrophic, meaning rich in nutrients. It notes a pronounced, almost continuous belt of silting vegetation, as well as reed beds, willow scrub and alder carr as typical features of this vegetation. Other impacts on the lake are assessed as moderate. These shoreline and water conditions may change over time.
The larger landscape context includes the FFH conservation area “Upper Eider area, including lakes”. It covers the Hansdorfer Aue valley from its confluence with the Eider to district road 32 near Schönwohld. Schönwohld borders the conservation area more or less directly. The lake and the Hansdorfer Aue valley thus offer different points of reference for understanding the natural environment of the area.
Getting around between Schönwohld and Achterwehr
Outside built-up areas, a combined pedestrian and cycle path runs along Rendsburger Landstraße between Achterwehr and Schönwohld. The municipality’s 2024 climate protection plan rates it as very well developed. Its route and endpoints are clearly specified, which may be useful if you would like to include walking or cycling in your plans.
This path and the description of Hansdorfer See address different planning needs: the path identifies a specific section for pedestrians and cyclists between two places, while the lake description focuses on its water and shoreline features. This may help you decide whether a clearly identified route or the distinctive silting landscape matters more to you.
The wider area around the municipality of Achterwehr is also shaped by nature. Large parts of the municipality lie within landscape or nature conservation areas and belong to Westensee Nature Park. There is also a public bathing area at Ahrensee within the municipality. These details refer to the municipality as a whole.
School chronicle and cultural heritage sites
The Schönwohld school chronicle covers the years 1882 to 1960; it was started in 1882 by teacher Sievert Holling. The 180-page edition is available for 10 euros. If you are interested, you can write to schulchronik@achterwehr.de to check current availability in advance. This provides a specific connection to local school history alongside the landscape.
Individual cultural and natural features also form part of the village’s character. The Griesenbötel inn in Schönwohld is designated as a cultural heritage site. A protected yew stands in the area bounded by K 93, “Am Griesenbötel” and “Ins Fegefeuer”. A municipal planning document from 2003 described it at the time as approximately 120 years old, with a trunk diameter of about 80 centimetres and a crown diameter of around eight metres. The yew is protected under Section 15b of the LNatSchG.
