Schierensee lies in Westensee Nature Park; the GroĂźer and Kleiner Schierensee lakes shape the landscape. Other topics to explore during a stay include the local hiking trails and the history of Schierensee Manor. Nature and architectural history thus offer distinct areas of interest.
Lake District and Protected Waters
In the surrounding area, the Unterer Schierenseebach connects the Kleiner Schierensee with the Westensee, which lies at a lower elevation. More than 500 invertebrate species have been recorded in the stream, including the rare freshwater pearl mussel and mayflies, which depend on clean, oxygen-rich water. The stream adds a flowing body of water and a habitat of its own to the lake district, and water quality is important for these species.
The Ahrensee and northeastern Westensee nature reserve is nearby. It protects a representative, largely intact complex of lakes and flowing waters in the young moraine landscape of Schleswig-Holstein. The area’s natural features therefore include both individual bodies of water and larger protected landscapes.
The Wider Area: Rendsburg-Eckernförde
There are four nature parks in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district. Westensee-Obere Eider Nature Park is characterised by numerous lake complexes in the Schleswig-Holstein Uplands. Westensee covers around 7 km² and is a popular destination for day trips.

Suggested routes in Schierensee include the 1.5 km village loop, the 2.5 km manor loop and the 3.5 km “Via Marienberg” route. Longer options are the 5.4 km lake loop and the 8.4 km Grand Lake Loop. The local hiking trails are not marked. Bear this in mind when navigating, and check trail conditions before setting off, as they can change.
There are 17 circular hiking trails listed for Westensee Nature Park. Hiking trails 4, 6, 7, 8, 10 and 17 can be downloaded to a navigation device or a smartphone navigation app. This regional offering provides another way to navigate; digital routes and trail conditions can change.
Schierensee Manor and Its History
Caspar von Saldern had the manor house at Schierensee Manor built and died there in 1786. The house was extended between 1776 and 1782; this phase of construction included Baroque and Neoclassical decorative features, as well as a landscaped garden. The manor house can be visited by prior arrangement with the estate management.
The village’s earlier history includes its sale to Bordesholm Monastery in 1470. This is a different historical reference point from the later extension of the manor house: the area’s history encompasses both this medieval event and the manor’s 18th-century architectural history.
Swimming Area and Café
At the swimming area in Schierensee, Café am See 17 prepares cakes, gateaux, burgers and chips fresh and focuses on organic and regional produce. Check in advance whether the café will be open on your travel dates and what it will be serving; opening and menu details can change.
