A find from Köhlmoor also makes Osterby archaeologically interesting: the head of a bog body was discovered there. Its hairstyle is known as the Suebi knot and is considered the first original example of a style previously known only from written accounts. Alongside the landscape and hiking, the find provides a tangible link to cultural history during your stay.

Landscape along the Osterbek

Osterby stretches along the Osterbek through a hilly landscape shaped by the ground moraine of the last Ice Age. The Osterbek tunnel valley is part of the glacial tunnel-valley landscape of the HĂĽttener Berge; tunnel valleys were formed by meltwater flowing beneath the ice. The stream and glacial landforms are therefore two distinct aspects of the landscape: the Osterbek describes the location of the village, while the ground moraine and tunnel valley provide the geological setting.

Circular trails and cycling options

The Osterby–Kochendorf Trail is a circular hiking route that starts in the village centre by the Schinkenkrog restaurant. It is considered suitable for a short walk. The route runs alongside meadows and fields, then through a wooded area. A shelter at the bridge over the Osterbek provides a place to rest.

Hiking Route 2 passes through the hedgerow and sunken-lane landscape of the Hüttener Berge. By contrast, the Osterby–Kochendorf Trail initially runs alongside meadows and fields and later through woodland: the two routes highlight different aspects of the landscape.

The Osterby–Kochendorf Trail is partly suitable for cyclists; Cycling Route 1 can be started in Osterby. If you are planning a bike ride, bear in mind that the circular trail is only partly suitable for cycling. A starting point in Osterby is specified for Cycling Route 1.

Archaeological and historical traces

Near Osterby, three Bronze Age burial mounds are clearly visible in a field. Another historical point of interest is the Osterwall, a four-kilometre section of the Danevirke. The Osterwall and the Viking settlement of Haithabu were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018. The Bronze Age burial mounds and the World Heritage site around the Osterwall thus represent different historical points of reference.
