The community center is Melsdorf’s local cultural hub; the village also has rail and bus connections to Kiel, as well as rail connections to Rendsburg. For planning your trip, two questions are useful: Which events would you like to experience, and which connection suits your planned journeys?

Village History and Culture in Melsdorf

Historically, Melsdorf belonged to the Quarnbek estate and the Flemhude parish. The volunteer fire brigade keeps village traditions alive, including raising the maypole on May 1 and a lantern festival in autumn. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the dates and arrangements in advance.

The community center hosts cultural events that also attract visitors from outside Melsdorf. This offers a variety of cultural experiences: recurring village traditions on the one hand, and events at the community center on the other. If you would like to plan your stay around a specific event, you can first check the relevant dates and then plan your other days accordingly.

Getting Here and Getting Around

Melsdorf station reopened in 2015. Trains to Kiel and Rendsburg run hourly. Bus routes 91 and 14/15 also go to Kiel; stops are located at the village square and the station, and buses run every half hour. When looking for a holiday apartment, your preferred mode of transport can be one of your selection criteria: the train is the stated option for Rendsburg, while both train and bus are options for Kiel.

The station is freely accessible and step-free, and offers bicycle parking. Station facilities may be temporarily affected by construction work. As schedules can change, check current departure times before setting out. This lets you choose your connection based on your actual travel dates rather than relying solely on a general frequency.

Nature and Culture in the Wider Rendsburg-Eckernförde Travel Destination

Rendsburg-Eckernförde district is home to four nature parks, including Westensee Nature Park. It covers 250 square kilometers of hills, valleys, meadows, forests, lakes and bogs. There are marked trails for hiking, as well as longer and shorter circular routes, including routes suitable for families. Four themed cycling routes, along with access to the Kiel Canal Route and the Ochsenweg, add to the options for bike trips. The district’s signposted cycle network covers 1,000 kilometers—this figure refers to the district as a whole, not to an individual route.

Natural and cultural attractions along the hiking and cycling routes in the nature park include Lake Flemhude, StrohbrĂĽck Lock, Emkendorf Estate and Arche Warder Zoo. The 88.3-meter-high TĂĽteberg offers views across Westensee toward Kiel. The different options can help you choose: circular routes and marked hiking trails offer a different experience from the themed cycling routes or the longer district-wide cycle routes.

Historic buildings also shape the region’s character in Rendsburg-Eckernförde. The manor houses in Schierensee, Deutsch-Nienhof and Emkendorf are distinctive buildings with landscaped parks. Westensee and Flemhude are home to medieval fieldstone churches; the nature park also has historic burial sites, including megalithic tombs and barrows. These destinations complement the region’s natural attractions with distinct opportunities to explore its cultural history.
