The Königsförde lock on the old Eider Canal, the history of Groß Nordsee Estate and trails through wetlands and a river valley offer different ways to explore Krummwisch. On foot, the focus is on historic buildings and the landscape; the Kiel Canal Route also includes Krummwisch in its list of places. You can tailor your stay to culture, nature or cycling.

Groß Nordsee Estate and the brickworks

Groß Nordsee Estate is first documented in the 13th century. During its historic operation, the estate’s brickworks produced 8 to 10 million bricks a year. This gives the history of the area a distinctive industrial note. The Elysium Chapel was built on a small hill opposite the estate. Together, these places take you from the estate’s early history to the traces of brick production and the chapel, without requiring an extensive itinerary.

Königsförde: lock and swing bridge

In Krummwisch, you can explore the Königsförde lock and a section of the old Eider Canal. The lock is one of the six chamber locks built to overcome the difference in elevation along the canal. It was restored in 1987–1988 together with the adjacent wooden Dutch swing bridge. Information boards tell walkers about the historic site. A hiking trail crosses the historic drawbridge next to the lock. If you plan to take this route, check the bridge’s accessibility on site.

Walking trails by Stoffsee and towards Heisch

A walking trail near Krummwisch passes the Stoffsee nature reserve. The inland lake, which covers approximately 14 hectares, lies in a landscape of wet meadows and fen plants; there are opportunities to observe waterbirds there. Those interested in wetland habitats will find a different focus here than on the route towards Heisch.

This route descends from Krummwisch, from an elevation of about 20 metres above sea level, into the valley of the former Alte Eider and then crosses a bridge over the river. The change in elevation and the river crossing define this section of the trail. Plan your walks according to the landscape that interests you, and check the accessibility of individual trails on site.

Cycling on the Kiel Canal Route

Krummwisch is included in the list of places on the Kiel Canal Route. The route runs mainly along well-maintained paths and quiet country and farm roads. Along the canal, cyclists and pedestrians can use service roads to shorten the route. Path surfaces, traffic conditions and the route may change; check up-to-date maps before setting off.

Cycling and nature trails in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district

The Rendsburg-Eckernförde district has five long-distance cycling routes, five e-bike tours and twelve themed routes ranging from 24 to 79 kilometres in length. The district also has a 1,000-kilometre network of signposted cycle paths. These options describe the selection available across the district. The district is also home to four nature parks, consisting largely of nature and landscape conservation areas and providing habitats for a diverse range of wildlife and plant life. The 180-kilometre Nature Park Hiking Trail passes through all four parks.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Krummwisch, you can start by considering whether local history, walking trails or the canal route will shape your stay.
