By the end of the First World War, Kronshagen had developed from a farming village into a residential community for Kiel. Kiel city centre is about six kilometres from Kronshagen. The town’s history and its distance from Kiel offer two different points of reference when choosing where to stay: one describes Kronshagen’s transformation, while the other places it in relation to Kiel.
Getting here and location
Kronshagen can be reached via the A210, A215 and B76. The railway stop reopened in December 2014; check current train connections separately if you plan to travel by rail. The road connections and the historical date relating to the railway are different points to consider when planning your trip.
Local history in the town centre
Kronshagen town centre is designated as a protected ensemble within the category of urban spaces. The ensemble includes the Seemann commercial building and a residential high-rise with shops. It also includes the former town hall, dating from 1910/11, and the former commercial building of the Agricultural Supply Association, built in 1924. These examples combine different building types and uses; the years 1910/11 and 1924 provide two specific historical reference points. If you are interested in the town’s development, Kronshagen’s history cannot be reduced to a single type of building.
Green spaces and older parts of town
The garden-city character is also expressed in different ways. Public green spaces are defined by ornamental and fruit trees and shrubs. In older parts of Kronshagen, there are large plots of land, often with mature trees. Public open spaces and the tree cover in older areas are therefore two distinct aspects of the townscape. If, alongside local history, you would also like to consider green spaces when choosing where to stay, these features offer a practical point of reference.
Sport and exercise
The Kronshagen Gymnastics and Sports Club, founded in 1924, offers activities including football, athletics, swimming, tennis, gymnastics and hiking. The club’s offerings may change over time, so check current options if you have a particular activity in mind.
The Kronshagen Primary School sports centre has a sports hall, an assembly hall, gym rooms, a sports field and a teaching pool. The community school/grammar school sports centre includes two three-court sports halls, an artificial turf pitch, football pitches, athletics facilities and a beach volleyball court. Access to individual facilities may depend on bookings or access rules; check in advance if you are planning a specific activity.
Talks and cultural programme
The Kronshagen Adult Education Centre programme includes monthly talks at the BĂĽrgerhaus from October to March. The summer programme includes excursions in Schleswig-Holstein, two theatre visits and a five- or seven-day trip. The formats range from individual events to a multi-day trip. As the programme may change from year to year, check current dates and offerings if you are planning a visit around them.
The wider region: Rendsburg-Eckernförde
The wider travel destination of Rendsburg-Eckernförde opens up a broader view of the region. Rendsburg-Eckernförde district has 55 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline and a 1,000-kilometre signposted cycle network; it is also home to four nature parks.
