The Kiel Canal runs through Hörsten, whose municipal area consists mainly of wet meadows and grazing land. Schachtholm airfield is located on the southern side of the canal; sightseeing flights over Schleswig-Holstein can take off from there. The local landscape thus brings together water, open spaces and the possibility of seeing the area from the air. When planning your stay, you can decide whether the canal and landscape should take centre stage or whether a flight should be the main focus.
The canal, landscape and municipal boundaries
To the northwest, the Luhnau forms the boundary with Breiholz and Hamweddel; to the northeast, the Jevenau serves this purpose in relation to Schülp bei Rendsburg. These waterways represent different geographical relationships: the Kiel Canal runs through Hörsten, while the Luhnau and Jevenau form the municipal boundaries mentioned above. The land itself consists mainly of wet meadows and grazing land. The local setting can therefore be described in terms of both its waterways and its open landscape.
Schachtholm airfield and motorhome harbour
Schachtholm airfield is located on the southern side of the canal in Hörsten. Sightseeing flights over Schleswig-Holstein can take off from here. This offers a different focus from a stay centred on the landscape at ground level: a flight may be an activity in its own right if you would like to experience the region from the air. If you have a particular flight in mind, check the available options and dates in advance.
The motorhome harbour at Schachtholm NOK airfield caters to motorhome travellers. The operator lists 52 pitches directly on the Kiel Canal; only a road separates the site from the canal. Only motorhomes with their own wet room are permitted to arrive. There are no sanitary facilities on site. As entry requirements and facilities may change, check the latest information from the operator before travelling. This will allow you to compare the conditions with the requirements of your own vehicle and travel plans.
Dining and other travel decisions
Restaurant Himmelsstürmer is located next to the motorhome harbour. It serves regional and Balkan cuisine. If you would like to eat there, check the current menu before your visit, as it may change.
The wider travel destination of Rendsburg-Eckernförde offers a broader regional perspective. Rendsburg-Eckernförde district has 55 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline and a signposted cycle network of 1,000 kilometres. The district also contains four nature parks, all of which are crossed by the 180-kilometre Nature Park Hiking Trail. Around 70 kilometres, or two-thirds, of the Kiel Canal also run through the district. These figures give you an idea of the region’s diversity, while Hörsten’s own character is shaped by the canal, wet meadows, grazing land and the airfield.
The 325-kilometre NOK Route is also part of this wider cycling network. It runs along the Kiel Canal and through its hinterland.
