Fockbek brings together signposted cycling routes, nature watching in the moorland and a route exploring local architectural history. This gives you different options when planning your visit: you can explore landscapes by bike, walk or cycle through the moorland, or learn about the stories behind notable buildings.

Cycling routes between moorland, lake and river landscapes

Fockbek has eight signposted circular cycling routes. The routes described include paths through Fockbek Moor, around Fockbek Lake and along the Sorge and Eider lowlands. These landscape features give you a clear guide when choosing a route: moorland, lakeshore and river lowlands each offer different experiences along the way.

A longer cycling loop in Fockbek passes through neighbouring communities. Its route follows the lowlands of the Sorge and Eider, the shore of Fockbek Lake and parts of Elsdorf Wood. If you would like to include a longer loop in your plans, this route offers another way to explore these landscapes by bike. Check the local signage before setting off.

Explore Fockbek Moor on foot or by bike

The Fockbek Moor nature reserve can be explored on foot or by bike along a circular route maintained by the municipality. An observation platform offers views across the moor and its plant and animal life. The moorland route therefore offers more than just exercise: you can experience the landscape from the path and take in views of the moor and its wildlife from the platform.

The circular route makes a good option in its own right among Fockbek’s nature activities, whether you prefer to spend your time cycling or walking. Together with the cycling routes through the moorland, around the lake and along the river lowlands, it offers a choice of landscapes and ways to get around, without requiring you to follow a set order.

Local history along a route of notable buildings

A local route highlights notable buildings in Fockbek. Information boards explain the history of each building and make architectural history the focus of the tour. This lets you shift your attention from the landscape and nature to local history. Individual buildings and signage may change over time.

Rendsburg-Eckernförde on a wider scale

The wider destination of Rendsburg-Eckernförde adds regional perspectives to the local options. The district of Rendsburg-Eckernförde has a 1,000-kilometre signposted cycling network and 55 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline. The district is also home to four nature parks. These district-wide figures provide a broader context for cycling and nature trips, while the eight circular routes and the moorland and local-history routes offer specific experiences in Fockbek.

The nature parks in the district consist largely of nature and landscape conservation areas and provide habitats for a diverse range of plants and animals. Westensee-Obere Eider Nature Park is characterised by numerous lake complexes in the Schleswig-Holstein Uplands. It includes Lake Westensee, which covers around 7 km² and is a popular destination for day trips; the Eider’s banks within the nature park are home to kingfishers.

The 98-metre-high Aschberg is also part of the regional landscape. In fine weather, it offers panoramic views extending to the Kiel Canal, Eckernförde Bay and the state capital, Kiel. For a regional hiking option, the 180-kilometre Nature Park Hiking Trail passes through the district’s four nature parks. This makes it easy to distinguish Fockbek’s local cycling routes from the wider nature and hiking options in the broader destination.
