Breiholz offers a variety of ways to spend your stay: cycling along the Kiel Canal, a trip to Aukrug Nature Park and activities on the Eider. Birdwatching in the Eider meadows and views of passing ships round out the picture. When planning, it helps to distinguish between a cycling stage, time on the water and observing the landscape.

Cycling: a stage or a specific tour

Breiholz lies directly on the Kiel Canal long-distance cycle route and is used as the starting or finishing point for a day's stage. In addition, a cycling tour of just under 15 kilometres leads from the Kiel Canal into Aukrug Nature Park. It starts at the canal level with the Breiholz ferry and heads into the northwestern part of the nature park. This means there are two different approaches to planning a cycling trip: following a stage on the long-distance cycle route or taking a specific tour with a stated distance and destination. The tour runs mostly along minor roads, agricultural tracks and roads with cycle paths.

On the Eider: paddling, SUP and a rest stop

At the Breiholz canoe rest area, the Eider is 50 to 60 metres wide and usually lined with reeds. There is little boat traffic there, making for relaxed paddling in nature. Breiholz bathing area is a suitable starting point for SUP tours on the Eider. Nearby, there is a canoe landing stage for paddlers on the Kiel Canal route or the Holme Tour who would like to stop for a rest.

Nature watching and fishing

Birdwatchers can observe many different bird species in the Eider meadows at any time of year; cruise ships and container ships can be seen from Breiholz almost every day. Fishing enthusiasts can fish in the Eider, the Kiel Canal and the numerous floodplain areas in Breiholz.

A race with its own course

The International Men's Eight at the Schleswig-Holstein Netz Cup is described as the toughest rowing race in the world. Its 12.7-kilometre course starts in Breiholz and leads to Rendsburg's county harbour. The 12.7 kilometres of the rowing race are a different route from the cycling tour of just under 15 kilometres into Aukrug Nature Park.

Regional setting: Rendsburg-Eckernförde

In the wider travel destination of Rendsburg-Eckernförde, the district has a signposted cycle network stretching 1,000 kilometres; around 70 kilometres, or two-thirds, of the Kiel Canal run through the district. There are also four nature parks, crossed by the 180-kilometre Nature Park Hiking Trail. The European long-distance path E1, marked throughout with a white St Andrew's cross, also runs through the Hüttener Berge, Brekendorf Forest and over Aschberg.

Westensee-Obere Eider Nature Park includes numerous clusters of lakes in the Schleswig-Holstein Uplands. Westensee, covering around 7 km², is a popular day-trip destination; the Eider's banks in this nature park are a habitat for kingfishers. This regional information complements the specific options in Breiholz with a broader cycling and nature setting.
