Blumenthal is shaped by a post-glacial landscape in central Holstein and is connected to Westensee Nature Park. For travellers who want to include landscapes and hiking and cycling routes in their holiday plans, the village offers a clear connection with nature.

Landscape and Paths in Blumenthal

Hedgerows, small lakes, hills, meadows and extensive woodland define the local character. This variety makes the landscape itself an important part of deciding where to travel: you can focus your stay on nature and outdoor activities, choosing between hiking and cycling.

Blumenthal provides access to a network of hiking trails and surfaced cycle paths through its connection to Westensee Nature Park. When planning, you can first consider whether you would rather travel on foot or by bike. One specific cycle path runs along the L298 towards Langwedel. It was completed in 2009–2010. Check the current condition of the path before setting out.

Much of their area consists of nature and landscape conservation zones, providing habitats for a diverse range of animal and plant life. Westensee-Obere Eider Nature Park is characterised by numerous lake complexes in the Schleswig-Holstein Uplands; it includes Westensee, which covers around 7 km² and is a popular excursion destination. Kingfishers live along the banks of the Eider in this nature park. Dosenmoor in Rendsburg-Eckernförde district also provides a habitat for distinctive flora and fauna.

There are various regional hiking options in Rendsburg-Eckernförde district. The 180-kilometre Nature Park Hiking Trail passes through all four nature parks. The European long-distance path E1 runs through the Hüttener Berge, Brekendorf Forest and over the Aschberg; it is marked along its entire route with a white St Andrew’s cross. The Nature Park Hiking Trail is described by its total length, while the E1 is defined by its markings and route.

Rendsburg-Eckernförde district has a signposted cycle network 1,000 kilometres long. This is a regional measure; the cycle path along the L298 towards Langwedel remains a specific route reference for Blumenthal. In fine weather, the 98-metre-high Aschberg offers panoramic views stretching to the Kiel Canal, Eckernförde Bay and the state capital, Kiel.
