Wahlstorf offers different starting points for a trip: the architectural history of Gut Wahlstorf, cycling and hiking trails, and waterside spots with their own visitor conditions. When looking for accommodation, it may help to first decide what you’re most interested in: architecture and culture, a walking or cycling tour, or activities on the water?
Gut Wahlstorf: Moated Castle and Architectural History
The former moated castle of Gut Wahlstorf stands on an island surrounded by two branches of the Schwentine River. The architectural ensemble includes a late-medieval double-house manor house whose core has remained largely unchanged, and a fully thatched barn dating from 1584. It is considered one of the largest and oldest surviving half-timbered buildings in Schleswig-Holstein. The architecture thus brings together different historical reference points: the late-medieval manor house and a barn with a clearly established construction date.
A local theatrical tradition is also part of the area’s cultural profile: Wahlstorf has staged a Low German nativity play since 1998. The 2025 performances took place in the Weizenscheune at Gut Wahlstorf. If you’re planning for a later year, check whether and when performances will take place and where they’ll be held.
Cycling and Hiking
The Land-Tour is a 38-kilometre cycling route through the rural surroundings of Holstein Switzerland. It passes through small villages and visits Gut Wahlstorf. Gut Wahlstorf is also one of the Schusteracht’s eight cultural and historical highlights. Its cycling routes are also suitable for walks. The options mainly differ in how you travel: the Land-Tour is a specific cycling route, while you can also use the Schusteracht cycling routes on foot.
Waterside Spots and Local Conditions
Lake Lanker is part of the Schwentine Waterway. Some parts of the lake are off-limits to boats, or boaters are advised to avoid certain areas to protect waterbirds. Check the latest boating notices before setting out by boat. There is an official swimming area on Lake Lanker, east of Gut Wahlstorf. Before you travel, find out what facilities are available there.
Fischer Bock in Wahlstorf is a canoe launch point. Food, coffee and cake are served on a terrace by the lake; check the latest information on what’s available and access before your trip. You can drive there with a trailer. However, the canoes still need to be carried about 60 metres downhill to Lake Fuhlensee. So if you arrive with a trailer, this additional carry is still part of preparing for your canoe trip.
Nature Conservation at KĂĽhrener Teich
The KĂĽhrener Teich nature reserve is part of the Natura 2000 network as both a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a Special Protection Area (SPA). It protects important breeding, resting and feeding habitats for threatened and rare bird species, as well as for the fire-bellied toad.
