Mucheln’s rural character is reflected in the fields, hills, forests and bodies of water surrounding its four districts. The landscape is considered suitable for hiking; in season, you can explore it on foot or by bike. Secluded spots are considered suitable for picnics. Mucheln therefore offers a clear combination of landscapes, outdoor activities and peaceful breaks in the open air.

Nature and Getting Your Bearings in Mucheln

The Lebrader Teiche and Gödfeldteiche nature reserves are nearby and offer opportunities to observe flora and fauna. They offer a different focus from hiking through the local landscape: here, the emphasis is on observing plants and wildlife. Mucheln is located on the L 53, a useful road designation for finding your way around the area.

Plön as the Wider Travel Area

The wider travel destination of Plön includes Plön District, which lies between the Baltic Sea and Holstein Switzerland and has around 50 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline. The district includes about 80 lakes, including Lake Großer Plöner See, covering 29 km², and Lake Selenter See, covering 22 km²; of the two, Lake Großer Plöner See is larger by area. Large parts of the district also belong to Holstein Switzerland Nature Park. It covers 75,000 hectares and offers opportunities to experience nature and see rare animals.

Along the Baltic Sea coast of Plön District, there are opportunities for swimming from Mönkeberg to Sehlendorfer Strand. Sailing, surfing, diving, boat trips, offshore sailing excursions, cutter trips and surf fishing are also possible there. For other water-based activities, you can explore the Schwentine water trail in Plön District by canoe; the lakes can also be explored by sailboat or excursion boat. Coastal and inland waters thus offer two distinct groups of regional water-based activities.

On land, cycling and hiking tours are possible in the gently rolling landscape of Plön District. The signposted cycling network covers 850 kilometres, and there are also developed Nordic walking trails. Routes may change in the future. A two-day cycling tour, “Baltic Sea Coast – Holstein Switzerland,” starts in Kiel and runs via Plön and Lütjenburg to the Baltic Sea coast; it is particularly suitable for pedelecs. Route details may change here, too.

For a cultural contrast, Plön Castle overlooks the lake of the same name and is the landmark of Plön District. Two free audio guide tours are available in Plön’s old town and castle area. They can be accessed by smartphone and each lasts about 20 minutes. Check that they are available before your trip. Groups can book tailor-made combined guided tours of the castle area, which include visits to the Prinzenhaus, the castle park and the castle grounds. Booking arrangements may change.

A bathing area on Prinzeninsel in the wider travel destination of Plön offers a gently sloping sandy beach about 100 metres wide. It can only be reached on foot or by bike. Visitor facilities may change seasonally, so check the current conditions before your visit.
