In spring, Barsbek’s village green is transformed by thousands of colorful crocuses. More than 60 old lime trees line the green, and the blossoms attract visitors from near and far. The exact blooming time varies each year, so don’t plan your visit based solely on a fixed date. The annual Crocus Coffee event features homemade cakes and handmade goods from the local crochet club. Dates and arrangements may change. Check them before your trip if you want to plan your stay around the event.

Village Culture and Seasonal Events

Barsbek has three boarded granaries, considered cultural heritage dating back to Slavic times. The boarded granaries belonging to the Sinjen and Wiese families are on private property and can only be viewed from the road. This means views of the buildings are clearly limited. Each year during the Probsteier Korntage harvest festival, Barsbek displays new straw figure designs beside the municipal parking lot on the B 502.

Practical points of interest also help visitors find their way around the village: Since 2019, the municipal parking lot on the B 502 has had a free e-bike charging station with four charging points. Check before setting off whether it is currently in service. Barsbek also has a weekly market as part of its local food offerings. If you’re planning your shopping around it, check the latest market details in advance.

Lake Barsbek and the Natural Landscape

The Barsbek Lake and Surroundings Nature Reserve can be reached by bike from Barsbek or from the Baltic Sea Coast Cycle Route on the dike. The lake within the nature reserve covers around 40 hectares; the entire area measures 146 hectares. This makes clear the difference in size between the water and the larger protected landscape.

Lake Barsbek serves as a hunting ground for a pair of white-tailed eagles; their nest is located between Krokau and Fiefbergen. For planning purposes, both the cycle access to the nature reserve and the sizes of the lake and the overall area offer useful points of reference, without implying that you will see white-tailed eagles.

Plön as the Wider Destination

The wider destination of Plön includes Plön District, which lies between the Baltic Sea and the Holstein Switzerland nature region; its Baltic coastline is around 50 kilometers long. Swimming is possible along the district’s Baltic coast from Mönkeberg to Sehlendorfer Strand. Sailing, windsurfing, diving, boat trips, offshore excursions, cutter trips and surf fishing are also available there.

Plön District is home to around 80 lakes, including Lake Großer Plöner See, covering 29 square kilometers, and Lake Selenter See, covering 22 square kilometers. Large parts of the district belong to Holstein Switzerland Nature Park. It extends over 75,000 hectares and offers opportunities to experience nature and spot rare animals. These landscape and recreational attractions belong to the wider destination of Plön; they should not be confused with Barsbek’s local features.
