Löptin can be explored through three different themes: the Vicelin Cycling Route, the swimming area on Lake Löptin and the village’s history. These offer starting points for a bike ride, time by the water and a glimpse of local traditions.

Cycling through Löptin

The Vicelin Cycling Route passes through Löptin and continues to Wankendorf, Ruhwinkel and Bornhöved. At approximately 100 kilometres, it is a longer regional route; it can be divided into four stages or two day trips. It also connects with the Ochsenweg, the Holstein Switzerland Cycling Tour and the Mönchsweg. This means the route can be viewed both in terms of its own stages and its links to other regional routes. Before setting out, check the route signage and course, as well as the connections to the routes mentioned.

Swimming area and village setting at Lake Löptin

There is a swimming area on Lake Löptin. A description from 2021 mentions a small lawn and a wooden jetty there. Check before your visit whether these facilities are still available. Despite the nearby B 404 and A 21, the village centre around the lake is considered quiet. This brings the swimming area and the described village setting together in one place.

Place name, coat of arms and tradition

The name Löptin is of Slavic origin and was first recorded in 1224. The municipal coat of arms is based on the seal of the squire Johannes Lubbetin from 1346. The dates refer to two different historical points of reference: 1224 to the first mention of the place name, and 1346 to the seal on which the coat of arms is based. Löptin is said to be the only municipality in Schleswig-Holstein with a heraldic coat of arms.

Greek folk dancing is also part of local tradition. A description from 2021 presents the sirtaki as a tradition in Löptin and mentions regular performances at Maypole and village festivals. If you would like to plan your visit around a festival, check the event dates.

In the wider destination of Plön

Plön district lies between the Baltic Sea and Holstein Switzerland and has around 50 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline. It includes around 80 lakes, among them Lake Großer Plöner See, covering 29 square kilometres, and Lake Selenter See, covering 22 square kilometres. Large parts of the district are within Holstein Switzerland Nature Park. The park covers 75,000 hectares and offers opportunities to enjoy nature and see rare animals.

The cycling routes can also be considered on this regional scale: Plön district has a signposted network of cycling routes covering 850 kilometres, as well as developed Nordic walking trails. This is a different scale from the approximately 100-kilometre Vicelin Route. Along the district’s Baltic Sea coast, there are opportunities for swimming, sailing, surfing, diving and boat trips. These landscape and leisure offerings belong to the wider destination of Plön; Löptin’s specific local features are the swimming area on Lake Löptin, the cycling route and the village history.
