Bosau combines architectural history with landscapes and a range of routes. St. Petri and the Dunkersche Kate are cultural highlights; hiking trails, circular routes and the area around Lake Großer Plöner See appeal to other interests. When planning your visit, it is worth considering individual places and the length of each route—from a historic circular walk to a circuit of the lake.
Church, cottage and traces of history
St. Petri Church was built from fieldstones in 1151/52 by Bishop Vicelin and dedicated to the Apostle Peter. Concerts are held there in summer. The church is also on the Mönchsweg long-distance cycle route. You can book tours of St. Petri through the Bosau Tourist Information Office by calling 04527/97044 or emailing info@luftkurort-bosau.de. As operational details may change, check the contact information before making an enquiry.
The Dunkersche Kate is a half-timbered building from the 17th century, with a thatched roof, a cottage garden and a historic bakehouse. It hosts changing art exhibitions or arts and crafts markets throughout the year. The Katengarten, with its well-kept paths and planting typical of the region, including boxwood, is right next to the cottage. Here, the building style, garden and cultural offerings sit side by side.
Katzburg is a well-preserved Slavic fortification, probably dating from the 9th or 10th century. Its rampart rises up to eight metres high. From the ring rampart, you can look out over the Glasauniederung from the edge of a plateau. The probable date and surviving rampart give the site a historical character distinct from the buildings in Bosau.
Landscape and hiking trails
Thranbruch is a historic cultural landscape near Bosau, with many natural meadows. The drained moorland is used for grazing, and numerous hiking routes pass through Thranbruch. From the Wierensredder observation tower, you can look out over this cultural landscape. Meadows, grazing land and the viewpoint each highlight a different aspect of the area.
Haselnussschlucht is a 300-metre-long, natural ravine in Bosau that flows into Lake Großer Plöner See. A narrow hiking trail runs through the ravine, crosses a bridge and continues over Löjaer Berg to the Panoramaweg. The route links the ravine to a specific continuation over the hill and bridge; no walking time is given.
Circular walk, lake circuit and beach
The Rote Bänke Rundweg is a 5.22-kilometre historic circular walk in Bosau. It follows seven red benches through Bosau’s history on the shores of Lake Großer Plöner See. A different scale is the 36-kilometre circuit of Schleswig-Holstein’s largest lake, which can start right in Bosau. This offers two clearly distinct route options: a local historic walk and a circuit of the lake.
Naturstrand Bosau is 150 metres long and has sand free of stones. The beach’s listed facilities include beach volleyball, a playground and a bistro. The beach therefore adds a focus by the water to the historic sites and walking routes.
Many other routes start at the Haus des Gastes in Bosau. Together with St. Petri’s location on the Mönchsweg, this gives you a specific starting point when considering different types of routes for your stay.
