Schillsdorf can be explored through three distinct themes: a ride on the Bokhorst Draisine, regional cuisine and brewing culture at Kirschenholz, and cultural events at the Church of the Holy Spirit. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing these highlights by the type of experience: the Draisine takes you through the countryside, Kirschenholz brings together food and its own products, and the church offers a cultural programme. This lets you decide whether activity, food or an event should shape your trip.

A Draisine ride through the countryside

The Bokhorst Draisine follows a disused railway line between Neumünster and Wankendorf, away from road traffic. The route passes through woods, fields and meadows. With a little luck, you may spot roe deer, fallow deer, storks, pheasants, foxes or hares along the way. The former railway station in Bokhorst is also one of the area's tourist attractions and is home to the local Draisine association.

For children, the Draisine ride is a little adventure; for friends, families and clubs, it makes a suitable outing. If you would like to plan a ride, confirm availability with the operator. This keeps the Draisine ride as a specific focus of your trip planning without assuming a particular date or offer in advance.

Kirschenholz: farm café, brewery and Holstein cuisine

Kirschenholz in Schillsdorf combines a farm café with a farm shop selling its own speciality sausages, as well as its own brewery. The business makes preserved Holstein specialities such as liver sausage and Schwarzsauer. Kirschenholz also produces and serves a beer brewed in the Plattdeutsch tradition. Holstein dishes served here include plaice, schnitzel and steak; homemade cakes and gateaux round out the selection.

The food on offer therefore ranges from hearty dishes to sweet baked goods, while the beer produced on site adds a distinctive touch. There are play areas for children around the farm. As visitor services and facilities can change, check the current offerings before your visit.

Church, community and culture

The Church of the Holy Spirit is a meeting place for people from Schillsdorf, Großharrie and Rendswühren. Its programme includes concerts, readings, church-and-cinema events, book presentations and community celebrations. As the programme may change, it is a good idea to check the dates before your trip if you would like to plan a specific cultural evening.

The church's artistic furnishings are another distinctive feature: the altar and baptismal font were created by Schleswig-Holstein artist Otto Flath. Alongside the events, the focus is therefore also on works of art with a clearly identified regional connection.

The Eider and the wider region

The Eider rises at Gut Schönhagen in the municipality of Schillsdorf and flows from there towards the North Sea. Its course passes through gentle hills, open fields and villages. Activities along the Eider include riverside walks, boat trips and wildlife watching. The Draisine and the river thus offer different perspectives on the landscape: a ride along a disused railway line on the one hand, and paths by the water and experiences on or along the river on the other.

The wider travel destination of Plön includes the district of Plön, which lies between the Baltic Sea and Holstein Switzerland and has around 50 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline. The district includes around 80 lakes, among them Lake Plön, covering 29 km², and Lake Selent, covering 22 km². There are opportunities for swimming along the district's Baltic Sea coast. Large parts of the district also belong to Holstein Switzerland Nature Park, which covers 75,000 hectares and offers space for nature experiences as well as rare wildlife. These regional landscapes complement the focus on Schillsdorf's distinctive themes.
